It depends on what you plan to do, but over a seven-day period, it's
almost certain that what you should do is get the seven-day travelcard
ON Oyster.

The Oyster card can store the travelcard, and if you get a seven-day
when you get the card, you don't pay the £3 deposit.

A seven-day travelcard is generally slightly cheaper than five times
the off-peak Oyster Pay as You Go limit, plus you can use it in the
peak, plus you can use it on National Rail.

They only way you might lose out would be if you don't need that many
zones every day or if you don't use it enough every day to reach the
daily limit.

If you are staying in zone six and travelling around central London
every day, then the seven-day travelcard stored on Oyster is ideal.

There is no simple answer to that, but here is a link to the fares

The thing to bear in mind is that the Oyster card itself is just a
means of storing credit, and it can be used to store, for example, a
weekly travelcard.  A weekly travelcard stored on Oyster is exactly
the same price as a weekly travelcard on paper.

An Oyster card can also store Pay As You Go credit.

Depending on what zones you cover at what times of day and what modes
of transport you use, the total amount of Pay As You Go is "capped" in
any single day to just under the cost of a one-day travelcard (or bus
pass) covering the same amount of travel.

However, unlike a travelcard or bus pass, if you don't reach the cap
on a particular day, the credit remains for use on subsequent days.

A weekly travelcard offers a much greater discount than a one-day, so
a person travelling to work and back five days a week on Underground
and buses would be better off with a weekly travelcard, and still have
free travel at the weekend.

And to really mess up the whole plan, National Rail services, for
which travelcards are valid (including those stored on Oyster), mostly
don't accept Pay As You Go yet, so their gates read Oyster cards, but
only to check if there is a valid travelcard on them.

You begin to get the idea of how complicated it is ...

And can I stress that the answer to the logical question of "in that 
case why use a travelcard at all", is that they are valid on a range of 
National Rail services that Oyster PAYG isn't. But it is valid on some - 
so knowing what your travel pattern is will help that decision.

When you buy a period travelcard you can specify the start date.

But that is then fixed; it isn't triggered by first use.

You could take a 140 bus from Heathrow to Harrow on the Hill and another
bus (223?) from Harrow to Wembley or take the Metropolitan Line, thus
avoiding central London. Unlike the Underground, the 140 bus also runs
through the night.

Sudbury town, which is quite close to Wembley, and then get a 204 bus.

I'm taking a flight from JFK to LHR with my girlfriend I want to go to
the hotel near Wembley Arena the flight arrives at 20 25 then the next
day we want to start using the 7 day card to explore London .

In that case it might be best to get a seven-day zone 1 - 4 travelcard
on Oyster (for your explorations from Wembley), and on the same Oyster

Heathrow and the boundary of zone 4.

You will have to use the London Underground Piccadilly line for PAYG
to be valid.

If your total stay is more than seven days, it might be worth asking
for the travelcard to start in the morning and use Pay As You Go all
the way to Wembley on the first evening.  If the whole visit is not
more than seven days, this wouldn't help.

We arrive on a thursday evening and leave the follwing thurs we want
the zone 6 as i have been in london many times . Can you specify that
you want the 7 day to start fri when i buy it thurs night?

Yes.  It will be easiest to do it at the counter.  Ask the clerk for
an Oyster card loaded with a seven-day travelcard starting the next
day (which will mean that you don't have to pay a £3 deposit for the
card itself) and ask for enough credit to be added for your first
journey to Wembley that evening (I am not sure what route it assumes,
with regard to your earlier question).

I can't imagine doing anything but getting the Piccadilly Line to
Green Park and then the Jubilee to Wembley Park, because it's simplest
and least risky.

Believe it or not, the Journey Planner suggests getting the Piccadilly
to Acton Town, Change for Alperton and then bus 83 from Alperton to
Wembley.

I think that the Journey Planner gives the wrong level of precision
with this sort of thing, because it depends on buses running exactly
on time.

Always 90p per bus, therefore £1.80.  An Underground journey is one
price regardless of whether you change, but the price is less after
1900 hours and depends on the zones covered.

Can we see a rough calculation ?

A 1-6 7D is £44.60 so you expect to exceed £8.92 on most of those five
days without 1) or 3) being true ?

Off-peak 1-6 cap is £6.50 1-2 cap is £4.80 
 
Peak  1-6 cap is £13.30  1-2 cap is £6.30

For tourists and depending on hotel location (and time you finish
breakfast) a 1-2 (£24.20) 7D would often be better value. Buying a
off-peak 1D is £7.00 per day but there is the complication that a
Railcard discount to £4.80 is available to some.

Realistically, the OP will be departing Heathrow at 22.00, and it's not 
really the right time to be exploring exotic routes. However the fastest 
route above seems to be an hour, versus an hour and a quarter via Green 
Park. Looking at a map, going via central London is at least twice the 
travelling distance!

Of course, some of this will depend on exactly where "near the arena" 
the OP's hotel is. A bus might actually get him at least ten minutes 
closer than a station+walk (and it's only a 1:3 guess that Wembley Park 
is the closest station).

No I wouldn't, but the poster seems to know that he wants zone 6.
Normally I'd expect a tourist to need a seven-day zone 1 - 2 plus
enough credit to/from Heathrow.

£24.20 divided by five is £4.84 so you'd be risking 4p a day against
the difference in pounds of any one journey on NR or beyond the zones
or before 0930, plus he is going to be using it for seven days anyway.

In this case, we know that he will be staying in zone 4 and knows
London well so will probably be taking advantage of various means of
travel for all of the seven days.  In the end, the poster has to look
at the fare guide and work out what's best.

Or maybe that sort of military planning would spoil the holiday and it
would be better to get the travelcard and relax.

I decided To take the 105 92 combo it drops me half a block from the
hotel

I Booked At wembley  I'm buying 2 oyster I pay 44.60  for the 7 day
1-6 oyster card and add 1.80 for 2 buses the day b4 making it 46.40
for each . I plan to take rt 105 then connect to rt 92 does anyone
know where to transfer in the same stop ?
