I've always assumed it was because a square just wasn't enough for the
Claphamites. So no, not really, and i would love to know.

I wasn't thnking so much of the five-sided shape, more of the way it exists
at all, surrounded by commonland. It's like a volcanic plug, or a basalt
stack. Even if it was a square or a circus, I can't imagine why it was
decided to build like that, or think of anything similar in London. I mean,
look at it.
