Bus fire
Do we still have someone who works for Arrive in Durham City on here
somwhere? If so, could you tell us what happened to the number 64 to the
Sherburn Estate this morning that was letting go of a lot of smoke,
seemed to have dropped something on fire onto the road near the rear of
the vehicle and required one fire engine and 2 police cars.
Passed it on my way to work around 8am this morning (Monday the 13th...
Garfield was right!) at the Sherburn Road Ends (Sherburn Road side).
For those who are interested, it was a DAF SB220LF / Plaxton Prestige
(as shown on http://arrivanortheastbusphotos.fotopic.net/c688861.html).
Not sure if it was an engine fire or something in the passenger saloon.
Looked to be engine as something looked to have dropped off and was on
fire on the road surface toward the rear, and I'm sure some of the smoke
was venting through the fuel cap (although I was trying to drive past at
the time, albeit slowly due to the junction) so it may have been an
optical illusion. The amount of smoke also seemed too much for a seat or
2 to be on fire and there was quite some smell passing the bus.

I must shamefully admit I wasn't aware of the Prestige - the Verde is
the bus body I associate with Plaxton around that time, possibly
because Cardiff Bus had several on Scania N113 chassis.
The Verde was a poor design - Cardiff also bought a number of Scanias
with Alexander Strider bodies, which were far more solid.
Did the Prestige replace the Verde, or were they built in parallel?

You could make better bodies than Plaxtons by using nothing but Lego
and gaffer tape.

Re: Bus fire
The Verde was replaced by the Prestige as was the Northern Counties
Paladin; it started as the Paladin LF and was built at Wigan on (if
memory serves) Daf SB220LF and Volvo B10BLE.

Many thanks. I thought the Prestige looked somewhat "Northern
Counties-ish" - your response has explained why!

Re: Bus fire
Hi
One of my contacts within Arriva NE has heard that it was 4082
(V653LWT) - can this be confirmed. If so, it has only been back on the
road for a year or so since a new engine and other work after it's last
engine burt into flames........
The DAF 8.65 litre engine is renowned for being somewhat fragile -
presume this was just it giving up in more spectacular style than most.

Re: Nat Exp 570
The 570 to Blackpool are very busty at weekends and a little bit quieter
through the week, but it is still a better to book your ticket in advance to
make sough you get a seat.

Perhaps the weekend services should be renumbered 42DD? ;-)
