I seem to remember Leyland (?) getting orders for Fleetlines in the late
seventies from a Moslem country (I think pre-Revolutionary Iran) which
wanted double deckers so that women and men could be segregated on
different decks.

Anyone else remember this or make any corrections?

In 1980 SAPTCO (Saudi Arabian Public/Passenger Transport Company)
commenced operations using many Neoplan N414 Citybuses in various
cities. The ones that I saw in Dammamm/Al Khobar had strange seating
layouts.
The buses were 3-door, the first was a 12 seater compartment for 12
seated women who had to pay the driver. As the third week of training
for the driver was "in service" with a driving instructor, no women
could be carried by these drivers for fear of sexual molestation of
the ladies by the oversexed driving instructor. The middle door was
for male passengers to enter and pay the seated (Sudanese usually)
conductor. This compartment had 29 seats plus 1-100 standing males and
a third door at the rear as an exit..

In a very surprise move, the operation went over to one-man operation.
This meant moving the partition to just in front of the third door.
The layout was now such that males entered via the front door, paid a
1 Riyal (12p) note into a hopper and exited via the centre door. This
area now had 32 seats. The ladies had a 9-seater area entered via the
third door and an "honesty" box (usually empty).

The effects on the bus meant that the weight was sensibly spread, not
all at the rear (with the engine). The conductors were sacked
overnight and taken to the airport (visas cancelled). The company had
a massisve headache with what to do with one million scruffy 1 Riyal
notes every day that a) wouldn't go through any note counting machine
or b) the banks didn't want.

Saudi Arabia is still the only country in the world that does not
allow women to drive.

Happy days.

Leyland- perhaps in desperation- had a National 2 demonstrator
converted to 3 nearside doors in an attempt to win a Saudi order...

...if only they'd have been part of British Aerospace...[don't go
there]

Which only goes to prove how stupid the rest of the world is regarding
women drivers.
