After a quick flick through other pix in that series, I'm guessing it's 
the fleet number. There might be one on the offside rear corner, but 
there should also be one on the front of the bus, shouldn't there?

Presumably there is a fleetnumber on the rear corner, hopefully a
fleetnumber will be added to the front in due course.?
