Cycling - New Forest Tour
You may wish to know that the New Forest Tour starts this weekemd. With a
bit of luck, both bike trailers will be in use.

This is an excellent way for cyclists to get away from Lyndhurst or
Brockenhurst, into the Forest proper, to cycle across unspoilt countryside.
Details at http://www.thenewforest.co.uk/tourbus.html

For the bus freaks - the intention on Saturday 26 May is that we will be
using not two, but THREE buses (on a rotation basis on two lines) .... one
will be 901 or 902 (vintage opentop VRs!!) and the other two of which will
be closed roof buses at the start of the day, but, by the end of the day,
they will be metamorphosised into opentoppers..... :o) (Honest!!!). So
some great photo opportunities. Sorry, I don't know exactly which buses
will be where and when.

Enjoy.

Well personally I don't, but even if I did, once would have been enough.

Originally, they only had the use of the crane on Saturday. Apparently, the
rooves will now be removed tomorrow (Friday). There was to be a plan
whereby one "new" bus of the two was withdrawn at a time on Saturday to be
de-roofed, as the first was done, it replaced the second; and as that was
done, it was to replace the VR.

All change now (today, Thursday): the first day of operation on Saturday
will now be with the newly deroofed B7s. And trailers. Provided they
remember to put the tow-hooks on.......

de-roofed, as the first was done, it replaced the second; and as that was
done, it was to replace the VR.

All change now (today, Thursday): the first day of operation on Saturday
will now be with the newly deroofed B7s. And trailers. Provided they
remember to put the tow-hooks on.......

It only seems to cover the SE corner of the Forest. No point on the
route seems more than 8 miles from a railway station and no two points
seem more than 11 miles direct ride apart. I cannot see many cyclist
paying the £9.00 fare for that. A cycle-carrying bus which went away
from the rail-served part of the Forest would be more use.

One running from Hythe (for the ferry to Southampton) via Beaulieu,
Lyndhurst, Godshill, Ringwood, Burley, and Brockenhurst back to
Beaulieu and Hythe would give non-cyclists a more extensive tour and
be useful for cyclists wanting to get into the remoter parts of the
Forest.

It is aimed at "family" cyclists, the idea being to get them away from the
trafficed roads around Lyndhurst and into the Forest safely. The SE part of
the forest has many waymarked cycle routes crossing it, they are about the
right length for groups which would include children. It is also aimed at
non-cycling families, who want to get to Beaulieu, Exbury etc (poorly served
by ordinary buses).

One running from Hythe (for the ferry to Southampton) via Beaulieu,
Lyndhurst, Godshill, Ringwood, Burley, and Brockenhurst back to
Beaulieu and Hythe would give non-cyclists a more extensive tour and
be useful for cyclists wanting to get into the remoter parts of the
Forest.

Which would be nice. But that would require three (or even possibly four)
buses to maintain a one-hour headway between buses, and I am not sure that
Hampshire County Council are particularly willing to more than double the
present contract price.

One journey does start from Southampton City Centre via Hythe, returning at
the end of the day, and the other bus starts from Eastleigh and returns
there at the end of the day. There is a "lunchtime" feeder to/ from
Southampton, onto the tour route, which is there principally to get a relief
driver out so the all-day drivers can have their breaks. That journey does
not, unfortunately, carry bikes as we only have two trailers, and is an
ordinary bus (youi change at Exbury).

We would love to do more: cost is an issue.

Many cyclists can go for free on the service!

.... and it *is* better than nothing!

seem more than 11 miles direct ride apart. I cannot see many cyclist
paying the £9.00 fare for that. A cycle-carrying bus which went away
from the rail-served part of the Forest would be more use.
