OT: Scammer at Heathrow Airport Car Park
I visit Heathrow Airport regularly and sometimes I see a guy in the car
park, going around and asking driver for a couple of pounds as he has run
out of money to pay for his car parked there. And I have often seen the guy
actually get money from unsuspecting motorists.
Wonder if anyone else has come across this at Heathrow. He must be raking it
in!
Ps. Sorry about the x-post

Plenty of places have beggars using a variation on that theme - last one I
experienced was on the Barcelona Metro (stolen wallet, need money for flight
and so on....)

When I was in The Gambia, some scammer with no legs hobbled up to me on his
stumps and tried to spin me some hard luck story about a wheelchair or
something.

I got asked by a young lady at the service centre by the Forth bridge
if I could give her £2 as she did not have the cash for the toll.

Because they're (almost invariably) scammers?

I once pulled up behind a German registered car at the Dartford tolls.
He was taking a long time, so I walked forward to see what the problem
was - he was counting out the toll in threepenny bits and (real)
ha'pennies.
I gave him a one pound coin.

Perhaps after the beggar bit your hand off you realised he was begging for

In my experience, they aren't "scammers", but are just looking for some

At Barcelona airport, a guy with an English accent approached me with
such a story!
There used to be a guy with a US accent on the metrolink trams in
Manchester who claimed he needed money for his flight 'back to Chicago.'
Slightly more worrying, there was a kid in school uniform always asking
people for money for his ticket. When I offered to buy him one, he
walked off...

Funny, that!
I've seen enough of these in the decade I've lived in London that I
can generally spot them before they've even started their spiel... so
when they attempt to open a conversation by saying something like "can
I ask you for a favour", I reply "not if it will involve me giving you
money at the end of it". That usually shuts them up.

There's a guy near where I live who's always asking for "help" getting
back to Brighton. I've told him several times that it's 60 miles -->
that way, and he can walk it easily.

Maybe. After six minutes waiting behind him, I was ready to try anything.

Absolutely. I would gladly swap a £1 coin for £1's worth of pre-decimal
coinage.
I own several pre-decimal coinage amusement machines and sometimes trade in
"the old money" and the current exchange rate for selling on eBay is a
minimum of 4:1 in favour of £.s.d and rising all the time.

I wouldn't be so sure. I was once walking through Mill Hill and a German
car stopped by the side of me. The driver was asking for directions in
German and didn't seem at all surprised that he hit on someone who could
speak German. Anyway he wanted to get to Northampton and was asking me
to point out the route on his map.
His map was so old that it didn't show the M1.

Euston Station used to have a Scouse guy who used to ask people who

was called by someone who actually bought him a ticket to Liverpool,
which he was later seen trying to flog to people buying tickets for
