BAA and Rip Off Britain - airport prices higher than High Street
I have been complaining for years about BAAs advertising prices being
the same as in the High Street. Which High Street? Certainly not the
ones I shopin. The prices at BAA shops are way ABOVE High Street
prices. Even their Duty Free / Tax Free are above the normal High
Street prices. Its about time BAA was taken to court for misleading
the public. The wholly owned Spanish BAA is one of the worst of 'Rip
Off Britain.'
The Times has a major article about the rip off scams that BAA are
allegedly pulling at every airport it owns. See:
http://travel.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/travel/article2344055.ece
Millions misled over airport pricesBen Webster, Transport
Correspondent
BAA, the airport operator, has misled millions of passengers about
prices at shops and bars in its terminals, according to the
advertising watchdog.
It has been forced to withdraw leaflets claiming that passengers are
paying the same prices as in their local high street.
The Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint against the
leaflets after finding that prices at airports were substantially
higher. It found that passengers paid the same as at outlets in the
City of London and the West End, where rents mean retail prices are
the highest in the country.
A glass of house wine at a bar at Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted cost
40 per cent more than in bars run by the same company in regional
towns and cities. BAA makes almost half its revenue from retailing and
has frequently been accused of focusing so heavily on maximising
income from shops that it neglects airport facilities and fails to
tackle the causes of delays.
One BAA leaflet, entitled Guide to Stansted Airport, stated: "The
price of all food and drink sold in BAA airports is matched with the
UK high street, so you won't pay a penny more than you' re used to."
The leaflet listed airport food and drink outlets. A second leaflet,
entitled Taste, stated: "Don't forget, our caterers are committed to
matching the price of all the food and drink they sell within their
airport stores against their high street equivalents." BAA told the
ASA that it had contracts with retailers which demanded price parity
with the high street. It claimed that prices at each airport were
compared with the local high street, or, in cases where the retailer
did not have a branch on that high street, with the nearest outlet.

Whilst I can see that this leaflet is misleading I think that it
is unfair to suggest that the prices charged are a rip-off.
The problem with the leaflet is that it says the prices are the
same as in *your* high street when in fact the prices charged
are the same as the ones charged (in the same store) in
London branches. I don't see the problem with this, LHR is,
in fact, in London.
It should be remembered that before this campaign (which
is many years old and predates Ferrovia buying BAA by a
long way), it used to be significantly more expensive to buy
things in the airport that outside with the franchised food
stores in particular charging up to twice the price.

Two points.
1. The Costa Coffee places at Heathrow charge exactly the same as they do
anywhere else in the UK.
2. £16 for two litres of premium brand booze isn't a bad price.
3. What idiot eats meals or drinks pints of beer at airport restaurants?

It's in Hounslow, which is a long way from the West End. The nearest
"real" High Street is probably in Slough.

Luton Airport (yes, I know it's not BAA, but I'm pretty sure the retail
outlets have a consistent policy across airports): £3.10 for a pint of
lager landside, £2.90 airside [is there VAT on beer, and would that
account for the difference?]. Is that the price in a pub in Luton (can
anyone comment?)

Comparing the landside Wetherspoons at Liverpool John Lennon to central
Liverpool would be a good idea too. (Some bitters and lagers can be
bought for around £1.50 at Wetherspoons outside London.) Haven't been to
it, though I have been to the airside bar- don't know who runs it. It's
definitely more expensive than what I'd expect to pay on the street, but
not by a large margin. Also, it's bright, has lots of seats and tables,
and good service, which frankly, I'd hold in much higher regard in an
airport waiting lounge than whether or not the price was the same as on
the high street. I don't think bright and airy is an adjective that I
could apply to much of Heathrow...

Isn't that three points?
How much do you fly? I will frequently have to leave home at 2 or 3 in
the afternoon, and not arrive at my destination until 10 or 11. That's
including the time from actually leaving my front door to arriving at my
hotel etc. at the final destination. If I want a hot meal in the
evening, eating at the airport makes perfect sense to me. Last time was
last week, before leaving for Alghero, and I ate at the airport- roast
chicken and rice. Wasn't bad, and cost £6. A plate of spaghetti in
Alghero can cost around the same, but in any case, I didn't want to wait
until 10.30pm to eat, and my partner would have refused to do so.
The flight back didn't leave until 10.10pm, so we were able to have an
early dinner in Alghero itself, once we found somewhere that would
servce before 7.30pm that was! :)
I simply don't mind the extra cost of coffee, food, or a drink at an
airport. I'm more concerned that I can buy something to eat or drink at
the airport, and get a seat to enjoy it in without much difficulty. In
_this_ respect, the airports I use most in the UK (Liverpool and
Manchester, neither BAA of course) do pretty well.

I've eaten frequently, regardless of delays. Depending on where you're
going, the actual amount of time between arriving at the airport and
then arriving at your destination can amount to many hours- certainly
crossing over the time in which you'd normally feel like eating a meal.
If you're connecting on a flight from the UK to Europe, this can add
another several hours. For long-haul, you'll usually get something on
the plane of course (though even that's changing with low-cost operators
where you'll pay extra.)
When I was commuting from here to Barcelona, I usually had a drink or
two at the airport but skipped dinner, as I knew exactly when I'd get to
the hotel, and out to a nearby restaurant (which I knew would still be
serving), and simply preferred to eat there.

When I have a delayed flight or a long connection, then I much prefer to
have a proper meal in a restaurant where I can sit at a table and be served.
And the last time I had a pint at LHR, it cost about the same as a 12 ounce
can of Budweiser on AA (which I didn't buy).
In answer to your question, no. Your sig would be perfect if it terminated

It must have been about five years ago that an airline
travelling in Europe served me anything approaching
a free meal.
You either exclusively fly long haul or are seriously out of

The only US airline I can think of which serves free booze in economy on
transatlantic flights is NW- at least as of January this year...

You don't fly much in Europe then, I take it. You don't get free meals
on most European routes in economy any more- some airlines let you pay
for one though. Some will serve a small sandwhich for free, and that's
about it.

Ryanair's ``Snack Pack`` is legendary, superb value for money and contains

their flight is delayed for a few hours . Besides which why should
people have to be paying extra for food etc at airports or on trains
for that matter when traveling. I shall be going over to Belgium on
Euros tar on Tuesday next and the prices charged on Eurostar for a
simple cup of tea or coffee are outrageous and Virgin trains are more
expensive . All outlets where they know they have captive customers
are intent on ripping people of left right and center, going out I
take my own food and drink but forced to pay their rip off charges on
the return journey or die of thirst and starvation .
Do you starve yourself from leaving home until you get to your
destination or something ?????? .

Just interested...what does this "Snack Pack" contain and at what price. I
have never flown with a "budget" airline as I have only ever used BA for my
Euro travels.

Never more so than in the UK. I have flown all over the world, US, SE Asia,
Australia/NZ, as well as Europe and I have NEVER come across any airports
that are as expensive as the London airports. I am fortunate that I often
fly Business Class and can, thus, use the lounges but occasionally I have to
use the airport catering outlets. They are, indeed, a rip off but I do
agree that sometimes one is "forced" to pay up or starve.

BA Disconnect will also charge you (although I think no long owned by
BA, so BA 'proper' must have less routes).
Most non-budget airlines on Euro pond-hopper routes include a snack of
some sort.
The the problem is not the cost is so high (usually it isn't), just
the inconvenience of fannying around with change/different currencies
for the passengers and the cabin staff. The whole thing could be
streamlined if it was included in the cost of a ticket.
Of course you could upgrade to business class and go from a snack to
something more like a proper meal, but that can cost you several
hundred pounds. Now that is likely the most expensive mean you will
every buy..

I've just got off an EZY flight and their meal wasn't free. Just a
costa-lot slice of Pizza and a soft drink for £5.50 (I passed). The
sandwiches were cold, rather than tepid.

As I said, Costa Coffee have plenty of places at Heathrow and sell at their
usual high street price.
I believe that TGI Friday in Heathrow Terminal 3 boasts about charging
exactly the same as everywhere else in the chain as well...
I'm afraid I haven't travelled through Gatwick for years.

Can depend on the time of day. KLM only seem to give you a sandwich if
it's a mealtime, otherwise it's a bag of pretzels (or whatever).

Sadly, the low-costs "only" make about a fiver per passenger trip (adds
up, over millions of trips). So any extra money on food is quite a bonus
on top of that. And giving a free sandwich to someone who has only paid
a pound for the fare doesn't sound like good business to me.
I have also discovered that they just don't have the staff to serve a
whole plane. On a one-hour hop it's unusual for them to make it all the
way down the aisle in the half hour 'in the middle'.

Water and sandwiches outbound usually.
Coming back the worst bit used to be the dreaded 'Gate 8' at Heathrow
Terminal 1.
But there's a BMI frequent flyer lounge there, so now I eat for free...
If it wasn't there then it's Costa Coffee...

You know of somewhere that sells a decent cup of coffee for less than £1:50

Same prices
Leeds is cheaper.
A local bakery has opened a shop there and is charging street prices for
sandwiches and pies.

More to the point, I think, is to compare prices in cities to their
airports. A coffee at BCN costs quite a bit more than in most cafes in
Barcelona, for example. I was shocked, I have to admit, to find 500ml
water bottles for 50 euro cents _airside_ at Alghero airport...

I don't mind eating and drinking at the airport either - if I need to
get up for an early flight I don't want breakfast at 3am. A better time
to eat is the airside lounge after check in.
The main factors for me are choice and quality, areas in which the main
UK airports have improved considerably. I can get a decent meal and a
good cup of coffee now in most, and if I just want a cheap soft drink,
water or a sandwich, there's often a Boots, WH Smith or Pret A Manger.
Compare with other airports, such as Corfu where I was last Monday -
horrible barely filled sandwiches and rolls at prices way over the norm
for the island. I was lucky and my flight got away early. My friends'
flight was delayed by more than seven hours, but the airline arranged
for them to be bussed to somewhere decent in town for lunch.
Prague, Alghero and Palma aren't much better.

Ah, the only BMI flights that I went on were the LH
codeshare ones, and LH food rules applied. During my
time this went from, meal to sandwich, to chocolate bar
to nothing. Could still fill up in the LH lounge though.

I've never seen an airport have extortionate food prices. Most of
them are roughly as expensive as the cities they are in, not more or
less, except that Third World airports generally have near-Western-
level prices. London is an expensive city in general, and even fast
food prices there are higher than almost everywhere else, and the
airport isn't really different than prices in the rest of the city.

Give me a break. So you pay £6.50 for a sandwich, chips and drink
which would normally cost £4.75. Big deal. You spend thousands of
pounds on a trip, you shouldn't complain about an extra pound or two
for food at the airport.

You don't get `offered` it. You have to `offer` to buy it. And why would it be
special to Prestwick on a flight from Bergamo?

How are LHR and LGW on seating space now? I haven't used them for
several years, but it did seem that they were really mobbed a few years
back, and I could have done with more dining _seats_ than dining areas.

Palma and Alghero are not hubs though. Alghero only has a few flights a
day (does it have more than a dozen?) so you'd not expect much there,
surely? Just having been in Alghero, I'll agree with you there's not
much there, but the drinks machines _airside_ only charged 50 cents for
a 500ml bottle of water. I'd just had dinner in town, so the food
available wasn't a big deal.

Toronto Pearson. The prices in the catering outlets are more or less
uniformly outrageous.

Ugh. Not only outrageous, but the quality and selections on offer
are horrid. Not an airport where I like to have much more than a
minimal layover, preferably minutes rather than hours.

Of course he should we all should why stupid people continue to pay
inflated prices they will remain inflated . This is the one fault I
can find with being born and bread in the UK I have found has I have
lived my life that most English people are very loath to complain
about anything or even avoiding some shop or other outlet that is
plainly ripping them off .

What makes you say that I wonder ! are you one of the many people in
this country who thinks nothing of throwing twenty or thirty quid down
your throat on a Friday and Saturday night by any chance.
I was brought up when times for the working class where hard in this
country and every single penny had to be made to count and be
accounted for . I was also told to look after the pennies and the
pounds would look after themselves and doing this has stud me in good
stead for all of my life up to now .
One does not need credit cards, bank loans and the like when you
follow the simple rule of looking after the pennies .
Regarding your question above I would dearly love to turn the clock
back to the late forties and fifties believe me .

If they are "real", yes. (I thought honours were fairly even, given that
the suggested Windsor is so much further away).
