Landlord ordered to pull down pub sign - because it 'encourages
drink-driving'.
It is about time pubs were stopped from inciting motorists to drink
and drive, not than many motorists seem to need much inciting if
overflowing pub car parks are anything to go by.
"When landlord Thomas Russell and his wife Tricia took over the Black
Dog pub, there were no signs of anything untoward.
In fact, the only sign visible was a nearby road side one, which they
have now been asked to remove - because it could encourage drink
driving.
An official for the Highways Agency told the new publicans that the
board, which shows an arrow beneath the words: 'The Black Dog,
Chilmark, Bar and Restaurant' was also distracting to motorists..."

A few observations.
Where are these overflowing pub car parks?
Should we shut all pub car parks thus making sure the road is used instead.
You do not have to drink alcohol if you go into a pub, just check how
many pubs serve coffee.
Lets get rid of all distracting road signs e.g. "Ripon 3 miles", "Tesco,
open 07:00 to 22:00", "Hospital A & E", "Catford Station"

Most people (e.g. you and me) don't have to drink alcohol if they go
into a pub, but some people cannot help it, and I get the impression
Doug is one of those people, after all he does have links to Alcohol
concern, Alcoholics anonymous and CAMRA on his website.

All pub car parks should be closed down and road parking not allowed.
Pubs should be returned to local use where customers are within
walking distance or can get there by PT. This will help to keep killer
motorists to a minimum.

The ready presence of alcohol is too much of a temptation for many
drivers.

Yes, commercial advertising graffiti should be discouraged and road
signs placed where they do not distract too much, preferably
overhanging the road within forward vision instead of cluttering
pavements.

No I am not an alcoholic and as I no longer drive it doesn't matter
much anyway. Fortunately I rarely frequent pubs as I don't like
football and the inevitable boring conversations about cars, or police
surveillance.
I have more than 300 links on my website. Do youseriously imagine they
ALL reflect my situation?

What about in places where there is no pub and no public transport?

So why don't we address the root cause, and make it illegal to drive
whilst under the affluence of incahol?

Open your eyes, & just because a car is in a pub car park does not mean
the driver is drinking.

I'll forget the all encompassing 'killer motorist' for the moment. I
thought you were against street parking.
Where you & I live there is no problem with PT late at night, in other
areas there aint no PT at night.

As a road sign only intrudes onto the pavement with its post, how are
you going to hang these signs over the road?

You seem to know a lot about pub conversations for somebody who does not
visit pubs.

There's a sign above the bar in one of our local pubs - a regional CAMRA
award winner, and national finalist, for "best pub" - saying they provide
free soft drinks for anybody who's acting as "designated driver" for a
group of three or more beer drinkers.

Even if it does, it doesn't mean the car's going to be driven by a
drunken person - many pub car parks are still fairly full on a Saturday
or Sunday morning, with cars which have been left there overnight. I'd
have thought Duhg'd approve of that, since they're not "road garaged"...

Or in the day, in many places...
But that - as we keep being reminded - is purely down to The Evil Car.

After all, we wouldn't want any road users actually seeing any road signs,

You really are full of shit.
I go to the pub once or twice a week. I dont drink, I can't drink.
There are plenty of people who go to the pub who drink soft drinks, or have
a nominated driver.

But the strong temptation to drink and drive is there. You can't tell
me that someone who reels out of the pub drunk is going think
carefully about leaving the car there and walking home instead.

The Evil Car continues to be allowed to exist in massive quantities,
and their drivers are allowed to kill with relative impunity, because
of economics and short-sighted policies. If you engineer work/

Yes Doug, as suprising and incredible as it may be to you many people do
just that. Oh, it may help you to know that only a very small minority of
people "reel out of the pub drunk". The vast majority leave whilst still
sober.

I must go to the wrong pubs. All we ever get to talk about is the beer.

We could tell any reasoned poster as its likely true most of the time.
However you are right, we can't tell you because you never listen to
anything anyone else says. For once your completely correct though
its sadly due to your own deficiences.

is that the one from that Stephen King movie? Are you starting to
