The environmental impact of the automobile.
"A site called "LivingSpace" has been created, it attempts to describe
the environmental impact of the automobile.

The address is www.CarEnvironment.net

It has a database which includes some of the basic numbers and facts
which people may require (This could be expanded if its helpful)."

"The automobile has not merely taken over the street, it has dissolved
the living tissue of the city.” James Marston Fitch, New York Times, 1
May 1960."

"“As danger increases, so the trap widens its jaws and more and more
non-car users get out of the way. With fewer pedestrians so there are
fewer accidents. Only the foolish or foolhardy would ignore the
risk ..” Death on the Streets, Robert Davis (1)."

""I remember years ago listening to the scientists [...] express
concern that some time towards the end of the 21st century we might
even face the possibility of losing the entire north polar ice cap. I
remember only three years ago when they revised their estimates to say
it could happen... by 2050. I remember at the beginning of this year
when I was shocked to hear them say it could happen in as little as 34
years and now, this week, they tell us it could completely disappear
in as little as five to seven years.”
Al Gore, addressing the Bali Climate Change Conference, Dec. 2007."

""“It needn’t be like this. All the congestion, the pollution, the
anger which suffuses London between the hours of eight and ten and
four and six is caused by just 14 per cent of commuters.” George
Monbiot, Evening Standard, 15th May 1996."

How can I take seriously a web site whose very first sentence on the home
page contains grammatical errors? It shows a lack of thoroughness and care.
And it doesn't seem to be particularly UK related, so, once again, off
topic.

Why would I expect you, a motorist, to take anything seriously?

Ha ha ha ha ha! So, you have just dismissed the clear majarity of the
population as not taking anything seriously. And with statements like that,
are we expected to take YOU seriously?

Why should I bother to read someone's web site when the authors haven't
bothered putting the effort in when creating it?

You wouldn't bother anyway because it puts you in a bad light. The
more objective on this newsgroup might find it of interest though,
particularly those very few long-suffering non-motorists who bother to
post here.

you were talking out of your anus on the subject of manslaughter,

Another GollumLie. At least 70% of the population are motorists - a
large majority.

Indeed. Whereas Gollum and his mates digging up dead bodies and
firebombing nurseries are "a representative sample of the
population". Or something.

That's what you get when you cram 8 million people in a very small
space resulting in the highest population density in the UK.

For much of the rest of the country, it doesn't exist.

How about me, a pedestrian. The above errors do not show the site in
question in a good light and make me wonder about how accurate the
rest of the content would be.

Wrong again. There are 27 million cars. So how many motorists do you

Odd. Your definition of "motorist" is normally anybody with a driving
licence, whether they own a car or not.

If you're now changing it to only car owners, you owe a few posters here
an apology - since you've labelled them "motorists" in the past despite
them pointing out they don't own cars.

My Gran is a motorist according to Duhg's logic. IIRC she hasn't driven
*anything* since 1952

More than 70% of adults have a driving licence and are therefore, by

With an average of 2 cars per family, and 4 people per family, that's
54 million people that use a car -- 90% of the country.

Wouldn't logic dictate that a person who has no car is not a motorist? Do
you have to be a driver to be a motorist?

I would say that if you have (and make use of) regular access to a
car, you are a motorist.

I own a car, therefor I am a motorist.
My wife drives the car more than I do, is she a motorist?

More to the point, how can you take a web site that cites Colin Campbell as

The site claims that we have only 35 years of oil left at current rates of
consumption. What it is actually giving is the reserves to production
ratio - a figure the oil industry uses as an indicator of how well they are
doing at finding new oil reserves, but which is most emphatically not an
indicator of when oil will run out, otherwise, going by historical values of
the ratio, we would have run out long since. The oil industry figure is
currently 41 years, but it was 35 years in 1983. The only thing that tells
us is that, over the past 25 years, oil reserves have been increasing faster
than the rate of consumption. If that is typical of the standards of
research on the site, it is not worth the paper it is written on.

The site also relies heavily on US figures, which has a quite different
pattern of energy consumption from anywhere else in the world, making it a
poor source of information about transport in the UK.

Hey! You CAN occasionally back up your shite with stats. I only posted

75% of households have access to a car (page 9)
81% of men and 63% of women hold a full licence (page 11)
81% of people live in a household with access to a car (page 12)

Sorry, Gollum, motorists form a large majority, however you look at
it.

Hey guys, STOP! Don't you realise, all this pissing around with precise
numbers is typical Doug distraction tactics in order to avoid the point.
What the hell does it matter if there are 20 million, 30 million or 40
million drivers (note, not cars)? The point is, there are a lot of them, and
Doug has dismissed them all as not serious if one fell swoop.

Doug, would you care to justify your statement "Why would I expect you, a
motorist, to take anything seriously" which would imply that being a
motorist implies not taking anything seriously?
