Trixbox with spyware/bot
Trixboxers beware! Uncle Ward over at nerdvittles.com has posted an
interesting article concerning a previously undisclosed bot that is
hidden away in Trixbox. Basically, it does an "ET" and phones home
every morning at 3.41am.
Article here: http://nerdvittles.com/index.php?p=198
Makes me glad I moved away from Trixbox to PBX-in-a-Flash.

You could just compile asterisk from source - it doesn't phone home.
Granted it won't have the pretty GUI that trixbox added.

I guess it's a plug for PBX-in-a-Flash ??? :)
btw the bot is a feature, what i understand, and i guess is easy to
remove/switch off, what's the hassle :) ?

Well, OK yeah, I'll give it a plug! I've been a fan of Nerdvittles for
a while - they have helped a lot of budding Asterisk@homers and
Trixboxers for some time now with a lot of cool extras.
Moving off Trixbox was something I'd been thinking of for a while for
a few reasons. Without going into great detail, the Fonality buyout
(or is it buyin?) of A@home seemed to herald a change of direction in
the project. I had also been looking at Elastix (which supposedly has
reliable faxability) and CentPBX as a replacement.

True. Yes, it *can* be switched off, and it was only sending back
"unidentifiable user stats" to HQ, but the point that I wouldn't feel
comfortable with is that they weren't exactly upfront about it. I
think it may have been better to make it a user option to send info as
part of the installation process or even include it as part of the
Terms and Conditions. But then again, how many of us really read those
before just clicking the accept button?
Anyway, that's my 2ps worth.

I can't be very scientific about it, but Trixbox is the only one that
I've managed to get to work with HFC cards.
I had no joy on Debian or Mandrake.
WIth Trixbox, ISTR it was pretty straightforward.

The HFC cards are "generic" ISDN cards. Using the mISDN drivers they
"just work"...
My pbx-inna-box uses a Debian variant (booting from flash) and works
just fine with HFC cards...
So if you take the time to compile up your own asterisk & modules, etc.
then it might be worth it for you.

Maybe you need the GUI front-end independant of the underlying asterisk,
etc. so just install FreePBX after asterisk?
