Ok, well I just received my Fritz!Box 7170 this morning, set it up and all 
seemed ok until I tried to connect to my NAS storage drives.

I have two Maxtor Shared Storage Drives on my LAN, both pick up IP 
addresses from the Fritz's DHCP server fine but when I try and connect to 
them, the computer can't see them at all.

I have a mixture of fixed and DCHP-assigned IP addresses on the network 
and all of them are accessible *except* for the NAS drives. Also, XP does 
not show anything under the workgroup name in "My Network Places".

As all works fine if I go back to my original non-wireless Fritz!Box I can 
only assume it is a problem with the 7170, but I can't for the life of me 
think what it could be. There is no firmware update available for the 7170 
according to the AVM website, I have logged a support request but so far 
no response.

Does anyone have an idea or three..?

Does the device if more versatile LAN control ?
In other words, is there an area where you can separate Ethernet ports 
from wireless?

Can you ping the NAS I.P.s from your PC?

Can you browse device by IP address e.g. Add network place or whatever?

Just a couple of ideas.

Why does that matter..? The NAS drives are connected by Ethernet, two of 
the three PC's are also wired, only the laptop uses wireless.

Yes. If I look for \\192.168.1.24 or whatever I can access the drives, but 
then my backup software cannot see the stored backups as it is set to use 
\\mss-123456 i.e. the network device name.

By IP address but not the network name of the device. The computers in the 
workgroup do not show up in "My Network Places".

Switch back to my old device and all is well, so it has to be a 7170 
issue, but what..?

In your HOSTS file, add the line "192.168.1.24 mss-123456" without the 
quotes, below the line "127.0.0.1 localhost"

Why would I need to do this simply because I am using a different 
device..? It works fine with my old non-wireless Fritz so it has to be a 
7170 issue, surely..?

If you can browse by IP but not by DNS name, it would suggest a DNS lookup 
issue.  Whether or not the real problem is on the Fritz or the NAS or 
elsewhere, adding to your hosts file should help matters significantly, I 
would have thought.

I also notice a thread earlier this week about 7140 routing problems. 
Perhaps the the Fritz range are not as robust as they once where....

Now then, which Hosts file..?! Doing a search I find no less than three:

HOSTS (no filename extension) in C:\I386 - This contains the single entry
"127.0.0.1       localhost" and nothing else.

HOSTS (again no extension) in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC - as above, 
contains only the single entry "127.0.0.1 localhost"

HOSTS.TXT in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Recent - this contains a 
considerable number of entries, all against the address 127.0.0.1 which 
look to have been added by "WinHelp2002" according to the comment line 
above them.

HOSTS.TXT in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC - this appears to be the same 
as the one above.


Sorry to appear dense, but I know zilch about the inner workings of 
Windows..!

The above is the one. Make sure it has no file extension when you've 
finished.

Hi,


It may well be a security function of the Fritz Box restricting or limiting 
NetBIOS names, etc.

You can probably configure the FB to either allow all such traffic / 
look-ups, etc. or you can give discrete explicit permission to the NASs.

Just some thoughts or ideas - hope it helps.

I guess this is a DHCP issue
Your old FritzBox has given a 1 week lease to your NAS drives.
Your new FritzBox (by coincidence in the same IP range) does not know these
adresses ... and tries to give them a new adress.
Can you completely switch off, or reboot your drives once connceted to your
new FritzBox ?
Then your NAS drives may  get a new adress .... eventually
I guess you did not switch them off, but you just unplugged / plugged from
the old to the new FritzBox ...

No, I don't think it's that, I switched off the drives and rebooted them 
and they did get new addresses. I even tried using fixed addresses but no 
difference.

I can address them by IP address but not device name. I have to keep the 
same IP range as I have several devices with fixed IP addresses that it 
would be a headache to change.

I've been busy so haven't tried the hosts file solution, still no response 
from AVM (very unusual for them).

Yep. Everything (net access, VoIP phones etc.) works fine, the only 
problem is I can't see the NAS drives.  I can see them by IP address but 
not by device name and nothing is appearing in "My Network Places" or "My 
Computer" (who thought of those names..?!)

Had a reply from AVM support and they don't seem to know either, they want 
me to send them screenshots and the error logs etc. so waiting to see what 
they make of those.
