Apologies for lame question but I would appreciate a clue or two as I 
seem to have completely lost touch with the market.

I'd become used to 12 month contracts with 100% cashback (mostly from 
CPW group in recent years) but current O2 contract (£45pm) approaching 
end of minimum term and no tempting retention deals on offer from O2 
themselves (CPW not the SP on this deal).

I'll only need 200 anytime, x-net mins (text use is minimal and I'm an 
hour's drive from any 3G coverage). 18-month deal looks as if it'll have 
to be acceptable and I wish to retain number but new handset not 
necessary as I have a few adequate ones still staggering on (V3i, c500, 
SL42/SL45i) but something that'll ebay well to reduce overall cost would 
be fine.

So, any suggestions as to where/how to achieve lowest net cost?

You can get SIM only contracts for around £15 a month for that usage, no long
term (usually 1 month notice).

Or PAYG - with Asda 200 mins will cost £16 - but most people who say they "need
200 mins" really mean that's the maximum they ever use. So if you vary between
100 & 200 mins then it'll cost £8-£16 a month.

In fact, that's what I've typically done so that the referral-site
cashback covers the cost of sending claims by Special Delivery with
consequential loss cover.

My question is just how much better can I do in the current trading
environment? How close can I get to 100% cashback for 200mins?

O2 offered me Simplicity at £15pm (ie standard rate) which is *deeply* 
unimpressive for someone who is attuned to £0 per month (or less).

I've found deals which net at just under £10pm but surely there's 
cheaper to be had! After all these years, has the market really changed 
so very much in less than a year?

I'll refrain from comment on phones4u but note that a J700 on voda 
"Anytime Calls 40" (700mins) for 12 months nets out at GBP40 for the 
year and I might be able to get something near that for the handset on 
ebay as well as a few quid from quidco to offset the costs of 4 postal 
claims.

Thanks for the link. That's the kind of deal I'm looking for. Now I need 
to discover how the dealer's reputation is looking at the moment and 
read their TnCs along with those of voda.

Damn... just noticed that they don't support porting of number to vodafone.
