I'm a bit confused by the various offerings from three.

On a PAYG (Flat12) setup, you seem to be able to add Internet 
Daily/Weekly/Monthly, or a monthly Mobile Broadband add-on.

The price list says that Mobile Broadband is £10 for a month with a 1GB 
cap, and that Internet Monthly is £5 with a 2GB cap.

There must be some reason for the Internet Monthly to be half the price 
for twice the data allowance of Mobile Broadband Lite.

Can anyone explain what it is?

and unless you use SMTP port ssl 465 instead of 25,
you'll get charged for every email sent

Though to be honest, 800k down and 300k up is good enough for a lot of uses.

That's odd. Are they capturing port 25? Silly thing to do.

Presumably if you use a VPN across it, they can't do that.

The Internet addons are intended for browsing on phones, the Mobile
Broadband for browsing on laptops.  I have no idea how this is enforced.

Maybe it isn't. If you get the 'mobile broadband' as distinct from the
HSDPA broadband you get a slower speed. For me that is OK, I would
only want to pay £5/month anyway. I don't think that it would be in
3's interest to upset people who are happy browsing, on their laptops,
with the slower speed. It would be easy to assume that all those
people, who use the £5 deal for laptop browsing, would be happy to pay
double for the faster speed. I don't believe they would, otherwise
they would have chosen that initially. It is the same illogical
presumption that all those who share music (or tape it as in the old
days) would have bought it had they not been able to get it for free.

Its simply that you can only use it on your handset - you can't use it
as a modem, because that is disabled.

Most of the other comments about differing speeds are simply wrong.

Mine runs on 3.5G most of the time, only occassionally slipping back
to 3G when the signal weakens.
On a Nokia 6120 it is fantastic value, and very quick.

No, that's definitely not the case. I tried it with a ZTE MF622 and it 
worked just fine.

I got about 900 down, 350 up, but the signal was poor at the time I tested.

It was quite useable. But this was the "daily" one - 50p to test with.

Interestingly, I've had a reply from 3 support saying that because I 
have a usb modem, I can't use a daily (or weekly or monthly) internet 
addon and that any data used will be charged at some extortionate rate. 
Luckily they are quite simply wrong. I did add it, I did use it and I 
wasn't charged.

Now the daily internet addon has expired, I've tried the mobile 
broadband, but it is  r e a l l y   s l o w   right now. About one tenth 
of the speeds I got before.

But I think there is a holdup in the 3 network. At first I got higher 
speeds via a VPN to my office network than I did direct through 3.

Then I retried and  got back to the 900k down, 300k up I got on the "50p 
for a day" deal.

Does 3 block anything on their 5 quid a month deal?  Do you get charged 
extra for any usage?

They attempt to block whatever they deem to be adult sites - BUT you
can get around most of these blocks using operamini software.
For some reason you can usually access a site using this, without
being redirected to 3's own adult collection.

on port 465 instead

All access to orb.com and any sub-domains of orb.com are blocked.

Again as has already been posted - you can workaround this using Opera
Mini.
