Britain lags Europe in broadband technology.
Britain is lagging behind Europe in broadband technology.
The UK lags behind other European countries, such as Sweden, Norway
and Slovenia, in the number of households with access to high-speed
fibre-to-the-home broadband internet services
Countries such as Sweden, Norway, Andorra and Slovenia lead the way
with more than 10 per cent of all connections being fibre broadband -
the fastest type of broadband with average speeds at around 100MbpS
(megabits per second).

Andorrans too? What, all 200 of them?
If you're going to post this sort of stuff, at least try comparing the
UK to other countries in Europe with populations of 60M.

France then, which has recently announced a program to fibre the country

Talk is cheap - come back when every property in France has fibre
If you want a counter-example, try rural Spain (A G-20 country) where
huge tracts of the countryside cannot even get a landline phone.

As has at least one of Britain's major telecomms players.
And does Britain currently lag behind France?

Dunno but France Telecom historically seems to act on a national basis when
it comes to introducing new innovations, not just the big cities as we tend
to do.
I can recall a holiday many, many years ago in a small village in the
Auvergne, where the local payphones had been converted to super-duper
push-button versions, long before anything like that arrived in the UK.

IME that's not true. Neither of the two last places I stayed in France,
one in a fairly rural location, the other in a beachside resort, had
broadband.

And France had Minicom when the rest of the world was still using flags
and morse code!
