accessing config of 2Wire BT 2700HGV modem/router
My brother just changed houses and home office.
He has a BT Connect Business account using a 2 Wire Gateway BT 2700HGV
modem/router.
Before, he had a desktop computer and a notebook. The 1st connected to
the router via cable, the 2nd by wireless. Both worked fine in their
original location.
In the current location he has a new desktop PC, same notebook.
Both the PC and notebook will connect to the Internet fine via LAN
cable. But the notebook will not connect using wireless. It shows as
"limited or no connectivity".
The main problem though, is that attempts to access the routers
configuration setup by entering the prescribed URL:
http://2wire.gateway.net into the browser keeps producing "Page cannot
be found".
I'm trying to help him work through these problems and am happy doing
so. But maybe it would be better to get a BT engineer in to sort
things out. The engineer would probably do it a lot quicker. Can
anyone give me any idea how much it would cost to get the engineer in
to fix this?

Hi,
did a 2wire this morning (not the same model) but it's home page was
at 192.168.1.254. Also the 2wire support on their web site is quite
helpful

Security settings? Try disabling WPA/WEP etc. If that 'fixes' it you
know what to look at. If not, its possible you have interference or
simply no signal.

Don't try to configure the router via the wireless connection - its a
catch-22, you need it configured so you can connect but you need to
connect to configure it...
Use an ethernet connection.

Assuming the router is set to the default type 192.168.1.1/mdc into your
browser. When asked for the password type in 2wire and then press enter.

Google again! not all routers are accessed by typing 192.168.1.1 . Maybe
only your type is. Some computers can be a bit funny working with types
of router. First check that a computer wired to the router gives full
internet access, if it does then it's the laptop at fault. Make sure it is
not out
of range as that make of router is not very good for wireless.
If the account is still a BT one then that is OK, if not then settings to do
with
the DNS need looking at.
Check if the IP is being allocated automatically on the computer
or whether it is set manually. You will see when it first starts up, if the
icon has dots going from left to right and wording to the effect of
"obtaining
IP address" then it is automatic.
You will find it works if you set it to manually assign an IP number and
default gateway. It's because something has gone funny in Windows usually.
If it still fails to work double click the wireless icon. Click properties,
go to
TCP/IP at the bottom of the list and click properties. Click "use the
following IP address" and type in 192.168.1.100, with the subnet mask
being 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway being 192.168.1.254
Click OK and exit. No try connecting again. It should work this time, if
not then it is a problem with the broadband connection itself.
It can't be WPA/WPA2 keys as they would not have been changed unless
the person chose to.
To access the router all you need to type is gateway.2wire.net/managment
in to a web browser. You need your user name/password.
Also have a look for the WiFi power level setting and put it to maximum.

It is not as simple as that. Rather than using Google I have just checked
the packaging of two BT 2700HGVs and one says the default is 192.168.1.1 and
the other says it is 192.168.1.254. In the latter case the default password
is said to be 2700hgv (note the lower case) and the former 2wire.

In fact I have had excellent results using the wireless with the three
2700HGV routers I have tested and used.

The OP stated that the account was still with BT.

When altering the settings in a router it almost always better practice to
use wired connection if possible because it is less likely to beome unusable
due to wrong settings and is more secure.

The command line
IPCONFIG /ALL
will tell you how the computer gets its IP address. If this is by DHCP, it
will also tell you the IP address of the router.
Report to us the output from IPCONFIG /ALL and we can guide you further ...
