And just what exactly HTML if not ASCII TEXT ?

You'll learn FAR more by 'hand coding' your HTML. It's not difficult for simple
sites.

Er, UTF8, ISO-8859-1 to name two. And there are a whole load of
non-Western-European country-specific variants to cover Kanjii and the
like, too. None of these is ASCII text.

Did I say otherwise ?

I've nothing against using a text editor to craft HTML, but if you really
are using notepad, do yourself a favour and look at some of the other
editors at e.g. the URL I gave. 

If you really think that "Notepad is the answer" I can only assume you've
not used anything else.

I don't recall needing anything more complicated.

I code in notepad too btw. Until the file gets too big of course.
