Ouch!
Found a nice little house after my divorce. nice village just up the road
from mine but about twice the size. Moving in on Friday - went to set up the
ADSL...

On the BT broadband site..

Your exchange has ADSL broadband.

However, despite an engineer's visit to your premises it has been proved not
possible for your telephone line to support broadband service. Please accept
our apologies. We are continuing to look for alternative technology
solutions and this site will be updated with developments as they happen.

Thank you for your interest.

This is 35 miles from central london on the main drag out to suffolk - main
line Liverpool st 25 min.
Still can't quite believe it.. Anything I can do guys?

Could ask your choice of ISP to re-check the data. I had one only a week
ago where the problem was a fault with the line data showed it way, way
beyond tolerance for an ADSL. Closer investigation showed they were half a
mile from the exchange and the data was screwed. Once fixed they had an
estimate of 8Mb. Not guaranteeing this would be the case with you, but
worth a try. Also try and find where your local exchange is in relation to
you, and do a guestimate of how far it is away (allow a bit for it not being
a straight line of cable). If less than 5Km, odds are it should be OK, over
5Km, a bit more iffy. Again, not a guarantee, but a good rule of thumb that
has served me well and rarely let me down.

Ask what the immediate neighbours have. If they get good ADSL, then apply
for a brand new phone line, and get a professional ISP to provision it with
ADSL. When complete, ditch the original line.

Good advice, IF you are OK with paying a connection charge for the new line
(or tying into a contract) with the new line.
Also, remember you may have a minimum contract on the existing line that
could cost as well.

Might work. A PITA but still best in the long term.

If you don't mind the cost of a new line, that might not support ADSL,
then go for an ISP that offers a monthly contract, and pay by cheque
or a pre-loaded card such as Maestro.
Remember that there will be the phone provision fee, the ADSL
connection fee, and the advance payment for 1 month minimum
service.
There is cellphone internet, think a current offer includes a
USB stick. Expensive and slow, with a meagre download
limit, minimum contract, and no guarantee it will work if
it can't find a signal. Going over the download limit, think
a second mortgage to finance it.
Some users in Scotland are limited to satellite internet,
think BT might offer it.. It might be subsised.

I must admit that I thought this product was dead for BT since the SEA
(Scottish Exchange Activation) programme took off, but I could be wrong. I
will investigate tomorrow, if I get time.

Don't suppose the area will be cabled either then, will it? (ie Virgin
Media?)

Had a bit of time yesterday to look through out portfolio (not much time
admittedly so may have missed something).

Could not find a current satellite broadband service listed anywhere.

Hi Paul how have you got on with this?

I've been looking at Satellite broadband on google, quite a few
companies out there that do it, it's the inital set up that's the killer
though. At least now though it's 2 way, I had a friend who had
satellite and only the download came from the satellite and the upload
had to go through an ordinary phone line.

Just do a search for satellite broadband on google and it brings up
loads of different companies, the cheapest I could find the equipment
was £500 and installation was £395, so it'd have to be a long term
soloution, no good if you're moving in 3 months again!
