Three broadband
I was thinking of buying one of those 3 portable modem doodahs sure you know
what it is.
I emailed them in relation to my question which I haven;t had a response to
in 8 days.
Ok basically as I understand it you give them £10 and get 1 gigs download
limit ... what I wanted to know is if I didn't use my 1 gig does it get
rolled over or do I lose it ?
thanks, hoping someone in here uses it.

Don't know the answer - but if that's the sales department's time to
respond, just think how long tech support will take!!

With most ISP's unused download quota doesn't get rolled
over, just reset.
If it is the service I'm thinking of, the other queries are,
coverage, and speed.
Someone in the horseracing group was sounding out opinions
on the coverage of british courses with his laptop.
Also query what the cost is for going over the 1GB limit,
it might be quite steep.

As far has I know you loose it but in my opinion it isn't worth having
anyway I signed up to the 3gig at 7.50 a month I have a 3 mobile phone
received the modem last Wednesday used it for a couple of minutes on
my laptop and put it back in its box .
Thought about it until yesterday and called and canceled the contract
the speed I was getting was useless I can find a better use for ninety
quid a year just waiting for the return bag to show up .

I couldn't understand a word they was saying, and I mean that honestyly. I'm
not one of those idiots whos goes around slamming call centres. So I just
emailed them hoping to get a reply, no joy yet though. Not looking likely
either.

May be I am different to most people but I never have had much need to
use support personnel but there have been lots of Virgin media
customers complaining about their Indian call center and rightly so .
I think I called them once in the last 12 months and that was for
something trivial .

Well the guy on their returns number on Sunday a Scottish man
did not seem the slightest surprised that I wanted to return the modem
he just rambled of the returns procedure to me gave me the returns
authorization number and that was that .Usually people on return
numbers want to hold a inquest before letting you return anything .

No, it doesn't.
Have you considered getting a payg one instead? Play.com have them for
£40 delivered, then you top up £10 a month that you want to use it and
get your 1GB, there's other options too.

I thought they was all some variation of PAYG :-s
I saw the one at play which seems good value. With the play one do you pay
£10 and get to roll over any bandwidth or is it literally no ties £10 use it
and stay under 1 gig thats it if you want it next month you pay another £10.
As thats what I'm after no ties just something I use whenever I may need it.
I'm also getting a lot of mixed vibe son 3 broadband from auwful to great.
I'm in the central London area so hoping it will be ok.

The latter. No rollover.
You have to remember to convert any top-up to the equivalent (1/3/7
GB) bundle else usage eats the pre-pay top-up value at the £1 per MB
rate.

You seem quite hopeful of one that will do rollover, I'm afraid that
none of them do though, even rollover minutes and texts on regular phone
plans are a thing of the past now with most companies.
With the payg option you need to put £10 on it, log into your account on
a desktop or something with an ordinary internet connection, convert the
£10 to the 1GB add on, it'll stop working when you reach 1GB. Make sure
you choose the correct add on 1/3/7GB otherwise you'll be paying £1 per
MB until the month resets, unless you get a nice operator who'll reset
the month for you!

Re: Three broadband
> even rollover minutes and texts on regular phone

My PAYG mobile rolls over, you load a credit, it doesn't
expire. I do however have to make an occasional call,
at least once every three months, otherwise it becomes
regarded as abandoned "Call your network operator".
There are complaints about speed for cellphone
broadband, though wide coverage.
WiMax is faster but base station coverage is mostly
in profitable areas. The WiMax model really needs
government or municiple funding, to build
up a sufficient mass of users, even then the number
of nodes for universal coverage makes it a questionable
business proposition at the present time.
One benefit of WiMax is in some national emergencies,
images from the scene, plans of buildings, can be
passed to and from control centres, when the cellphone
network has folded under the volume of calls from
people trying to contact their relatives, rearrange
meetings etc.

Quite possibly more to do with a price reduction on the Three website a few
months back.
The cost of PAYG modems was reduced drastically for contract customers.
FWIW
I am happy enough with my PAYG modem on Three.
I picked this option over the half price contract deals that Three "Direct
Sales" were offering because I wanted to see just how much data I would use
in a month in the system it is being used with.
I put £10 credit on it every month and it runs out "exactly" at midnight at
the end of the day mentioned on My3, which I do find very slow to update.
.
The modem does jump to 3.5G mode when downloading then settles back to 3G,
my E51 does this as well.
I may have been using the wrong APN (less hops), so hopefully the response
time might be further improved now.
I can understand people's problems with 3 CS, I had some problems
explaining that I wanted the unlock code for the modem. It took a few weeks
to get the code and get 3 CS to send the unlocking program.
I am also aware that there are alternative unlocking services.
BTW
O2 used to have data tariffs on their business contracts that would
"rollover".
The current issue of PC Pro compares the different offerings available in
the "Mobile broadband" market.
Hope it helps

JOOI, what's the qualifying requirement to get an unlock code with 3
PAYG mobile BB? Did you have to pay for it?

You register your details with 3 CS, IMEI number, Mobile number, etc.
Pay £15 to 3 CS (credit card) and they will send you the code with the
unlock program.
Explaining that you want to unlock a modem can be a bit of a struggle, and
there may be a delay getting the code sent out.
I assume contract customers need to complete 12 or 18 months before 3 CS
will supply the code.

Note that there are alternatives available but none free that I could
find.
One I used involved buying credits which cost 15EU. It unlocked the
device fine and I'm now using it on T-mobile.
