OT: Purple pipes
Does anybody know what the purple pipes are that seem to be laid by the side [or
cable tied to the barriers] of many motorways? Eg A1(M) in Yorkshire, M1, M42,
M62, etc? I assume purple signifies a certain use, eg telecoms.

No it can't.
That is for buildings, not motorways!

"Fibre optic cabling is to be installed along the M62 between junctions
22 and 26 from Monday 7 August. The cabling is part of a sophisticated
new transmission system, which will provide drivers with a more reliable
and informed journey."

And just what is all that new bandwidth to be used for ? Why no mention
of video feeds from all the new cameras ??

Apparently purple just signifies motorway

Thanks that clarifies from the link I quoted just being buildings.

Rather surprising some uses different.

Good point. Also have a look at Project
Indect:(http://singularityhub.com/2009/10/01/project-indect-set-to-monitor-europe-like-its-1984/).
In particular, note the reference to "Mobile object tracking". Don't
bother about tinfoil hats. This is for real.

Apparently for fibre optic cabling to give us better traffic
information.

Fibre optics = big bandwidth = real time video streams from cameras.
Have you counted them recently ?

A growing number of the roadside cameras are now using 3G for video
transmission. 2-3fps is perfectly acceptable, and it's much cheaper than
laying private infrastructure to provide cabled feeds.

OK - what's all the excess bandwith for ? Who has paid for it ?

(Hint - 3G may not have sufficient BW for multiple high resolution video
streams).

Meanwhile, at the uk.telecom Job Justification Hearings, Gaius chose the tried

Why the obsession with bandwidth? Had you considered that fibre is better for
long runs than copper?

If I think along the following lines, would I be unduly paranoid/cynical?

Highways Agency management to Treasury: We really, really need these
cameras/signs/whatever and, by the way, we need to lay big purple pipes so
we can connect them up. We know it's expensive but there's no other way...

Some years later, after a change of government:

Highways Agency management: I suppose we could come up with the readies for
a management buyout of this privatised motorway. Mind you, it's never going
to be a moneyspinner so we'd expect to get it cheaply...

6-12 months later after the deal is done:

British Highways owners: Oh look, big purple pipes! We can offer them to all
and sundry for their backbone fibres and rake in lots of boodle. How come we
never thought of that before?
