Meh, close to here they nicked a load of copper and managed to cut off
half a town's telephones, took BT over a week to restore it all.

They quite often don't manage that. Darwinian selection at its finest
IMHO.

Talk-Talk
Someone just telling me about their Talk-Talk line going faulty. They
would not do anything until she got an engineer to confirm the line was
dead, which cost her £90. She was without a telephone for 8 days, until
BT fixed the fault in the street cabinet.

What are their terms and conditions? I presume she can reclaim the £90
from Talk-Talk and her time investigating / reporting the fault.

Glad that I do not use this company!

If she pays line rental to them, and the fault is outside the house, then
it's their responsibility surely. That's what you pay line rental for.

I had a fault *inside* the house and TalkTalk sent an engineer to fix it for
free.

The T&C's are here, see 2.9 onwards. Looks like she should get compensation:

I'm assuming that the Talk Talk customer service person referred your friend
to BT for the fault report.
This was the big mistake.
Talk Talk is a telephone service operator and is obliged to sort out faults
if customers report them.
If it's a line fault, Talk Talk should report it to Openreach and get it
fixed.
They should NOT tell their customers to go directly to BT, as the customer
doesn't have a contract with BT.
