Weird number
Phone rang this afternoon, I didn't answer and when I checked the caller id
record it had
0018889666332
Which seemed like gobbledegook at first and didn't register on a Yahoo
search. But, breaking it down, 001888 is a website which seems to have
something to do with telephony http://www.001888.com/ and 966 seems to be an
area code in the US.
So, any idea who called me? Or was the phone just acting up in the hot
weather?

You're probably right, for the wrong reasons, I'd break it down as

00 = international
1 = USA (or more accurately NANP)
888 = toll-free call (overflow from 1-800 free numbers)
966-6332 = number

A Google search for "1-888-966-6332" didn't give any results

Knowing how the Americans love using the letters on their phone keypads,
it could stand for any of these words

http://www.phonespell.org/combo.cgi?n=9666332

I reckon it's 1-888-ZOO-OFFAL trying to call you :-)

00-1 (USA)
     888 (Toll-free)
966-6332 (the rest of the number)

You got an international spam call by the looks of it. If you had Skype
(or some other suitable VoIP) you could call them back and annoy them at
their cost...

(Skype will let you call US and UK freephone numbers without needing any
calling credit.)

That's a USA/Canada toll free number (+1 is the country code, 888 is the
area code, 966 is the exchange code). I don't know who it belongs
to, but normally only companies will use a toll from number for caller
ID.

Someone else has been called last week:
http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-888-966-6332

6331 is the University of La Verne, 6333 is the Frame it/Waban gallery in
Waban, Mass. So it seems to be an individual allocation, or a lie.

Kewl website.
Thanks to all for responding
Is there a website that identifies US area codes like the ones that do STD
for the UK?

Not that I know of (although someone here probably does), but googling
for "area code xxx" will probably do it in 99% of cases. You'll likely
pull up a local business or similar, or the wackypedia article, as
evidenced by http://www.google.com/search?q=%22area%20code%20920%22

This one has data for regular geographic area codes:

    http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco

I don't know of any which have data for non-geographic toll-free and
900 numbers though.
