It's always good to have a stand by just so that you can check a site, if
nothing else.

Hmmm ... I installed it on 6th June, how come it's only just 'out now'?

Well, that is the direct download for those who speak North American.
As this is a UK newsgroup I would assume that people would want the
English version. It is
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-GB

Downloads of Firefox 3.0 became available at 10:00 hours San Francisco
time today.

This is a release candidate: not a final version

How come Firefox 2.0.0.14 still tells me that there are "no updates
available"?

Check here:

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0/

Navigate to your platform and language, e.g. win32/en-GB

Also, with www.mozilla.com completely slashdotted, this still works.

And when you realise a lot of your add-ons don't work with version 3 and you
try to revert to 2.14, you'll find they're gone:-)

You can only have installed the 'release candidate' NOT the official,
final version 3.0.
There seems to be a lot of confusion in the postings, not least I
think because they didn't seem to widely publicise the release time -
just the date. It was, I think 17:00 GMT on June 17 2008.

Some comments have been made about extensions not working. Well, this
is so but that it bound to be the case as extensions are
written/supported by individuals. Until/if those individuals do an
update to their software then that is how it will remain. I miss 'Add
bookmark here' (original version) and the exchange rate extension.
The big plus point in v3.0 is the much faster speed.

Another confusion in the postings (see another thread) is that a link
was posted to the North American version, but surely, being a UK
group, people want the version in proper English - i.e. the GB
version.

Go here for the British version
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.0&os=linux&lang=en-GB

There is one thing that I see as a negative. When pressing 'control k'
Google appears but it is the 'dot com' version, I would have thought
it would be the 'dot co dot uk' version. There may be a way of
changing this but I need to investigate.

You can now click the star to the right of the address location to set
a bookmark, click it a second time to place your bookmark or even
delete it.

Running your mouse pointer over the favicon in the address location
bar, will reveal if the site has any 'identity information'. I haven't
seen a site that has any though so this may be a think to come.

One thing I did learn was a change (maybe) to the 'mailto' option.
When needing to send emails, from a web site, up to now the default
email client for the computer has been launched. By going to
Tools/Options then Applications tab, it is possible to set this to ask
which email client (inc Yahoo etc.) you wish to use.

As a tip for a useful extension, that does work in FF3, check out
'Fast Dial' and possibly make it your home page.
I also find the Groowe toolbar useful -
