"BT Call Reminder" caller ID and 1571 display: interrupts broadband connections
As I have an older (sic - only from 2000 actually!) phone, have been
plagued with anon calls of eg taped prize win scams etc and a
subscription to BT Number Withheld Reject didn't solve the problem as it
doesn't seem to reject calls where the number is an overseas one (and in
some other cases of UK numbers I might say) I bought the captioned el
cheapo remaindered unit for a few quid. Works OK except have noted that
periodically since connecting it the broadband link seems to hang -
modem/router lights go on and off, existing ssh links freeze and web
browsing stalls temporarily. The ssh links have to be broken and renewed
which is a bit of a pain.
Have googled both sites and groups but nothing immediately traceable on
this and nothing I can find on BT or other sites about config. Present
solution being adopted here: unplug the unit when online, replace (if
can remember to do so) afterwards...

And is the unit plugged in via a filter?

That's correct. It only blocks calls sourced from within the UK that are
tagged as "Witheld". Leeds General Infirmary for one manages to send
something that shows up as "Number Unavailable" on our CLI devices;
ACR wouldn't block that as it's not "Witheld".

If you're doing terminal work, you might want to consider installing
"screen" on the remote systems. It provides a layer of isolation between
the "network" and the "application" (bash, ksh, vi, emacs, whatever).
The resulting effect is that the application doesn't notice your remote
connection has broken, and you can transparently reconnect to it at a
later point.

I think we are talking about the little white stand-alone
caller display units.
These seize the line periodically (about every 5 min IIRC)
and flashes the red "new message" LED if it hears stuttered
dial tone.
As another poster said, it is essential that the caller display unit
is connected to the POTS side of an ADSL filter, it sounds to me
that it isn't, and consequently your router is losing sync every
time the caller display goes off-hook to check for messages.

Mine doesn't (an original CD50, bought within a very few weeks of my
exchange being enabled for CLI). Perhaps the OP's is a later model?
My CD50 also doesn't understand the CLI squawk you hear if you have Call
Waiting enabled. (Neither does my Audioline white box. Does anything?)

Here's an example of the object in question that prompted my post tho' if
you search in ebay for BT Call Reminder there's gazillions of same (here
url may be wrapped I think):

em
Just tried connecting the Call Reminder device to the BT wall socket and
then inserting ADSL filter plug into the Call Reminder device (opposite
connections previously) - modem/router Netgear DG632 front light for WAN
immediately starts flickering orange instead of green... will see what
happens next...
