Phone and Broadband for less than 6 months
Hi,
I've just moved into a new (rented) apartment and I expect to be there for
less than 6 months.
I understand that BT have recently started to enforce their 12 month
contractual term which historically they ignored. Can anyone confirm that I
have got this correct?
If it is, I need to find a supplier who will let me cancel after 6 months,
but I also need broadband internet (for the same timeframe) with reasonably
unlimited downloads (so that I can download TV programs).
I used to use AAISP, which gave me what I needed on the Broadband front, but
presumably, if I go with a supplier other than BT for my phone line, they
are not obliged to let me choose an alternative supplier for broadband? I
have found a few phone suppliers (such as First Telecom) who will let me
have a a phone line for 6 months, but then they insist on an 18 month
contract for their broadband, which kind of negates the phone advantage.
Have I understood all this correctly?
And if I have can anyone point me in the direction of a company that
*reliabily* provide what I need?
TIA

AAISP! They can provide a no-min-term phone line for use with the ADSL.
Normally it's a no-calls line, but they also provide actual phone lines
and they'll probably combine that for you.

Oh,..... under he "for work" section (though it does say they can provide a
residential line).
OG barred won't be a problem. I can use VoIP

If you have 3 coverage in your area?
3 Mobile phone network are doing a talk and text 300 deal wth a turbo modem
Nokia 6120 for 15 quid a month for 6 months minimum (90quid)
add a broadband package to that, and you won't need a landline

Do you mean mobile broadband.
I looked at that this afternoon and the normal download limit is 3 Gig a
month. You don't get many TV progs downloaded within 3 Gig.
DT have an option with a 10 Gig limit, but at 44 GBP pm for a 12 month
contract, it would be cheaper for me to take the BT line (with AAISP) and
pay BT's 12 months subs.
Thanks anyway

Ohhh... that much downloading!
I've heard it said O2 mobile broadband can be unlimited
So you want unlimited and only a 6 month contract
I'd be interested myself if anyone can come up with that

And horrendously expensive for anyone who might want to
phone him from their landline.

Please clarify. Presumably it depends on the landline tariff/provider.
Do BT charge extra for calling 3?

It costs me 13.5p a minute to call Orange, t-mobile,
Vodaphone, o2. To call 3 is 23.4p a minute during the day.
Even at weekends all mobiles are 6.5p a minute.
Prices from
http://www.thephone.coop/residential/telephone/callerplus.html
which are slightly less than BT

OK...although BT don't make it clear if they charge more for 3, at all.
Since I use 1899, which is significantly cheaper than those rates, I
won't worry. Few other landlines ever call my mobile...!

As I indicated before AAISP can do this - provided that you restrict your
downloading to outside work hours. For home use this is not an issue.
Though they do have a setup fee of 60 pounds and at 18.99 pm you can get
cheaper. But (one major outage aside) it is 100% reliable, which my
sister's Broadband from Orange is not. At zero pounds per month, she get's
what she pays for. Personally I would rather pay 20 GBP for something I can
rely on

Seems everyone does thats why I jacked in my "3" phone, 'tho their so
desperate to keep customers they offered it to me from 25 a month down
to 4.99 UKP a month so its kept as a reserve but as I had the landline
on divert to mobile, the costs were quite high.
Almost twice as much to call the 3 network..

I've been living out of a shoe box for the past three months and have only
had a mobile for that time. Companies (even utilities) seem happy to phone
me on the mobile number and my friends phone me from their mobiles out of
their 'inclusive' minutes.
The biggest problem is that some places (like the car hire shop this
morning) want a land line number because they think that it gives them some
extra security that I actually live where I say I do. Of course, with proxy
VoIP numbers available, a geographic land line number now means nothing of
the sort.

Tip: Take a free O2 or Tesco SIM, register it, use up the free credit for a
bit (and 'give your number to your friends'), then ring up O2 or Tesco and
ask for a porting code. Give the porting code to Three and you'll have a
number in O2's range (so will be charged from landlines as to O2) on a Three
SIM.
When BT charged a different rate for each mobile network O2 was the cheapest
and Three the most expensive. There may not be any difference in porting a
Vodafone or Orange number to three if BT charge the same, but AFAIK O2 still
have the cheapest termination so is most likely to be the cheapest for your
callers.
If you have an old Three SIM on WePay you can even topup your phone at a
discount by this method.

Yes. "Three" have big adverts in our High Street "Broadband without

But if I am reading it right you can only download 1gig a month, I
have a "3" mobile package had it 12 months now but don't think I would
touch this though .

I don't know about that, it may depend. The only operator I know which
breaks out different UK mobile number ranges in detail in their price list
is this US VoIP discounter
http://www.voicestick.com/Rates/International.aspx
(type "United Kingdom" in the search box, prices are US$) and their
cheapest isn't O2. Their cheapest are T-Mobile numbers starting with
79xx, followed by Orange. Their most expensive are also T-Mobile numbers,
those starting with 77xx and 78xx.
I don't know why those prices are like that (perhaps prices charged
for overseas long distance termination are not the same as domestic
termination tariffs?), but I'd like to know where 79xx T-Mobile numbers
come from since I use that VoIP company for forwarding a US DID number.
I have a T-Mobile prepaid SIM, but its number is a worst case 78xx. Not
knowing where to get a T-Mobile number in the right range I've been
considering getting an Orange SIM for a number to port to Three.

Green Telecom at www.greentelecom.co.uk will supply your phone line on
a three month minimum term and you will be free to add on whichever
broadband supplier you prefer to the line.

I don't think it's because of network. Some prefixes aren't defined to
a network and just have a catch-all default rate, including some T-
mobile 079xx
Messing around just now, I've found there are in fact 3 rates for T-
mobile - roughly 9 20 and 30 cents a minute, with only the first two
named as such
You might try two approaches: contact Voicestick and ask them to
define certain prefixes in their dialplan; they never replied to me
about this
Or get a different number
I've just rummaged through some Virgin and T-mobile SIMs in the
drawer and found a couple that are at Voicestick's cheap rate. I'd
have to check with T-mobile if they are still within shelf-life, and
then if a PAC can be obtained without topping up (if you want to
switch to 3).
Send me a message - this email address collects spam, but Google
filter it very well, and I look in there occasionally if I'm expecting
a real message

Time to see whether you can use an indirect provider such as the
Finarea/Betamax lot. 1899 and 18189 are considerably cheaper than this
at the moment.
