Virgin Media problems.
Anyone else having problems with their Virgin Media landine in the Hove area
tonight?
For the third time in as many months my line has gone dead, looks like it
could be an area fault this time though according to the status message
after dialling 0800 183 1986, just on hold to complain, starting to wish I'd
stayed with BT on this line.
John.
P.S. Just as I was about to press seend to send this message there automated
system hung up on me :( trying again.

Indeed, Alan luckly I've got another line (BT) and VOIP (can't make SOS
calls on the VOIP though) and also a mobile, but what about those with just
a virgin line?
From here on picking up the handset there is just nothing, (line power is
there cause you can here when you press the buttons, MF can't here myself
whistle/blowing though so probably not full power.) Incoming calls to the
number give equipment engaged tone.
As I said in my OP this is not the first time we have had problems, in March
a tennant upstars decided on VM and signed up (fair enough), on the Friday
night our line was TOS'd, on Saturday morning the letter came to explain the
idiots (VM) thought we had "Gone Away" it started working about 10:00 on the
Monday after a barrage of phonecalls.
Last month a neibor decided on VM, the f***king idiot who was sent to do the
provide destrubed several pairs in the local exchange (mux). We were without
service for another weekend.
But this takes the biscuit, it realy does, another complaint is no CLI after
14 years after BT introducing it, really no excuse for that either so it's
far time we went back to BT!
Sorry for the rant folks.
John.

Well FWIW...
We've had Two VM lines since 1996 and not once have they gone down..
Suppose we were in the Comcast Cambridge build area which it seems if
your in an area that was done right in the first place then it will be
OK for a long time, but some cabled areas weren't done quite so well..
Also a lot is now down to their fitters and installer contractors who
aren't as well trained as they might.
BUT don't expect all to be just so with good old BT they often leave a
lot to be desired these days; (I've seem a BT installer borrow another
pair and thus dis someone else!...
Having to deal with the Two of them VM and BT they are around as bad as
each other, but then again Vodafone isn't all that wonderful as are most
all comms and utility providers these days its all down the bottom line
and shareholder value ..
Like most all service providers these days
feck the customer, your just a nuisance;!...

Er, not quite.
A couple of years ago there was a fire in a tunnel associated with the
Guardian cold war underground telephone exchange* in Manchester. BT lost
many fibre routes as they had placed their primary fibres and the
protected route fibres (to give them the correct name) in the same
tunnel!! Not even VM do that - and I can vouch for it as, when we were
all part of NTL, I used to do network maintenance.
* Have a look at http://www.cybertrn.demon.co.uk/guardian/ -
fascinating.

I remember that one very well as I had just finished a
course which belaboured the point that the network was in a
loop around the country, then that fire (in one spot)
effectively split it in half. Just shows you how good the
training was in those days & it's even worse today...

But then the VM network is nothing compared to the scale of the BT
network. Both networks have their vulnerabilities, AFAIR it just seems
that when you talk about whole towns losing services it is mostly
synonymous with the phrase 'Virgin Media'.

Happened in Nottingham a few years ago, when someone (who
had been told he had to do a job he hadn't been trained to
do) dropped a bolt across some power bus bars. For most of
the day all people could get (if they were lucky) were
numbers on their own local exchange & nothing else.

That is unusual. It is normally difficult to get any kind of job out of a
BT engineer, let alone one they have not been trained for. Slip number
and off she goes - put the kettle on....
It is a comfort that the latest round of BT cost cutting is to recruit
'modern apprentices' to do all the work. It is getting close to the old
'pay peanuts get monkeys' ideology now.
