Question About the Late Great Toby
Does anyone know whether he used voice recognition S/W or was he a touch
typist with a screen reader.
The subject of Dragon VR S/W was raised in another group, and I couldn't
remember...

My recollection is that in terms of output he used software to read the
screen to him out loud. In terms of input I think he was a touch
typist, though as I recall he didn't think he was very good at it.
Why do you ask? As you looking for software? I have heard from people
who have used Dragon that it works well. On the other hand I've used
the voice recognition software that comes with Windows Vista, and
(after getting used to it) it seems to work well.
I'm not a big fan of the company that makes that software - I use
scanner software made by them. The software is fine, but their
customer service and technical support are really, really horrible.

Some of my customers are translators, and they mainly swear by Dragon
where as I do the swearing at it when silly fixes are needed. The worst
case being one customer being sold a Spanish/English dual version
when he should have had an English/Spanish version. The difference
may appear minor until all the defualt messages (installation,
warning and error messages) ONLY come up in Spanish.
A bit like installing Dutch versions of XP, when you cannot
read Dutch.
The company keeps changing its name every 8 to 12 months, which
does not help.
I agree the service and support people are dire and just tape
recorders giving standard scripted answers at best!

There is someone using it in another group, with some amusing results
initially. He says it needs to be "trained", or perhaps the
operator has to learn to use it correctly. I am not interested
myself, but I wondered whether the S/W was around and if Toby used it.

Unless huge leaps forward have been made in the last few years, yes- it
needs to be trained. And it can be amusing. I recall a chap who sat near
me training his system, and unfortunately his voice was pitched very close
to mine- so he got odd words appearing in the middle of his text sometimes.
