Hadron Collider
I read something interesting in the Sudany Times p.13 today. You all
probably know about the great switch ON this Wednesday of the Large Hadron
particle collider, which the boffins from the prestigious Euro Organisation
for Nuclear Research [CERN] believe may be an answer to some of the worlds
most useful technology. I thought it may be useful to point out that far
from the doomsday scenario being babbled around all this week one the
important practical issue that this machine is hopefully to uncover, is,
once a laboratory is built, to establish the theory of cloud formation is
inextricably linked to the level of cosmic rays. This would establish
whether there is another "ingredient" other than greenhouse gases involved
in climate change. The huge machine is to fire neutron particles into each
other at great speeds in a specially constructed "cloud chamber" to see if
mini clouds form? It's all beyond most of us, including the 3 billion it
cost, but the cloud formation information it may establish could be
interesting.
However we don't really want clouds here there's enough of 'em just lately
:)

... it should be noted that the Earth cannot be destroyed by this
experiment on Wednesday! It is in effect the day that they press the
self-starter button. There is then a long period of tuning before they start
running in the engine and full power will not be expected for at least a
year.
