The trick is to keep in the lee of the land as much as possible when
it's blowing hard. That way you get the benefit of the strong wind
while still sailing in relatively flat water. Much easier to do in west
Scotland than around Cornwall :-) We certainly didn't have sea states
anything like what's off Cornwall at the moment. The best sail we had
was a couple of hours sailing down the Sound of Sleat on a broad reach
at 8-9 knots in a Force 6 with no more than 2-foot seas. Absolute magic
:-)
