[WR] Atrocious Again
After previous heated posts regarding perceptions of this summer I can
definitely say that the weather is atrocious again today. I was becoming
worried though, after 7 hours of sunshine yesterday that we may have been
heading for a drought. Vastly relieved this morning to see the horizontal
drizzle interspersed with vertical heavy rain. Things are back to normal for
what is turning out to be a very grotty August so far.

The Beautiful Days music festival is soggily going on at nearby Escot Park.
It turned into a cold mudfest last year and with the temperature currently
bumping along at around 14°C, windy with intermittent heavy rain, this year
is going to be no different. Many events in the South West have been
abandoned, some for the first time since they started.

I take it back about the 'atrocious' June of this year. It was actually a
very dry month with a reasonably amount of sunshine, but still a changeable
month weatherwise.

Unless there is a big improvement in the weather, my warmest day so far
occurred on the 11th of May!

Summers 2007 & 2008 (June 1st - Aug 15th)
         Min Max Mean Rain Sun
07 11.0C 20.3C 15.7C 261 mm 477 hours
08 11.7C 20.6C 16.2C 215 mm 473 hours

Went to Escot on Thursday with the kids. The state of the ground, wet,
muddy and generally horrible, was more reminiscent of December than
August. Luckily it wasn't as cold as December...

This August is already looking poorer than last, 69.2mm so far vs
59.2mm, with an average max of 19.9C so far vs 21.8C last year...

Re: Atrocious Again
Continuous heavy rain and drizzle up here on Dartmoor at 6.1 mm/h, now at
1240 temperature is +12.9C circa 5 degrees below normal. Very murky with
hill fog higher up. Ground unusually saturated for time of year, no chance
of a drought up here Nick, in fact the opposite. Lawn grass is very
squelchy - again unusual for time of year. Bracken has even started to die
back a bit and the whole place is taking on an autumnal look.

After a very wet morning it cleared early afternoon here Will,
( www.minack.com/webcams.htm ) and it's warmed up sharply (see the
last 2 hours on the St. Ives temperature graph -
www.nci-stives.org/weather/Current_Vantage_Pro.htm . Currently (15:45)
18.1C, and with much lighter winds now & a bit of sunshine it's a lot
better than yesterday (which was the 2nd coolest day of the month,
windy & cloudy with it).

Clearance should reach you around sunset!

Total rainfall here for July+August already a record (since 1991) with
2 weeks to go.

Don't worry chaps - I'm coming down to Exeter next week to dry things out
for you. I'm playing in a charity golf day - assuming Exeter Golf Club isn't
waterlogged. :-(

I played y'day, very wet, and we are a free draining course. Almost late
October, not August
