Hi Mike and COL people on UkSci.weather.
When you use just 8 compass points for the wind direction, what
happens to SSW, WSW etc?
Just wondered!

Re: June 2008 - Pitsford Hall, Northants
Hi Steve
In Appendix III of the Observer's Handbook there is a table which
demonstrates the method of reduction of wind directions from 16 to 8 compass
points. On a routine daily basis, we do record to 16 compass points but as
you know the COL summary requires 8.
In short, the number of occurrences of wind from NNW, SSE etc. is 'shared'
between the two nearest compass points. For example, if NNW were recorded on
4 occasions, 2 would be added to NW and 2 added to N. Where you have an odd
number they are shared such the extra observation is thrown clockwise, e.g.
5 observations of SSE would result in 2 being added to SE and 3 to S.
I hope this is clear...but as I say the Observer's Handbook does explain it
quite well.
Regards
Mike
