June 2008: Synoptic Overview
June 2008 was as mundane as May had been exceptional. With
mean sea-level pressure within 3mbar of normal over the entire
British Isles, most places in the UK had an unremarkable month
with near-normal temperature, rainfall below normal in the
south but above in the north, while sunshine duration was quite
high in southern districts, but not far from normal everywhere else.

Mean pressure charts are available at:
Charts: http://www.climate-uk.com/monpre/0806.htm
The Monthly Review will be uploaded on July 2 to:
http://www.climate-uk.com/monthly/0806.htm
Graphs: http://www.climate-uk.com/graphs/0806.htm and

Not The Long Range Forecast should be available on July 4 on:
              http://www.climate-uk.com/page4.html

The sea-level pressure chart shows low pressure extending
WSW-ENE from the Canadian Maritimes and Newfoundland,
across the Atlantic towards Shetland, central Scandinavia and
northern Russia. The main centre was 1008mbar over northern
Sweden, with a secondary centre of 1010mbar near 58N 15W.
The Azores high was centred 1024mbar slightly east of its
normal position, but the most interesting feature was the
persistence of high pressure in the Greenland/NE Canada region
with a centre of 1023mbar over NW Greeland.

The sea-level pressure anomaly field was dominated by a large
positive area covering most of the Norwegian Sea, Iceland,
Greenland, and NE Canada. Pressure was within 4mbar of normal
over very nearly the whole of Europe.

The main anomaly centres were:
   +11mbar over SW Greenland
   - 7mbar between the Azores and Bermuda
   - 5mbar over central Sweden
   + 2mbar over NW Ukraine

Over the British Isles pressure anomaly ranged from -3mbar
over Shetland to zero in the Channel Islands. The anomalous
flow was very weakly SW-ly.
