Re: [WR] Sunny & Breezy in Devon
Just got back from the dust-bowl of an allotment and the drought-like
conditions we have had here along the southern coast of Devon so far this
summer is taking its toll on my veggies.

The runner and French beans have either died or just stopped growing and now
look pathetic, the toms just haven't grown at all but the aubergines are
obviously enjoying the dry conditions as are the onions and potatoes.

No comparison between the shrivelled allotment beans and toms to the ones in
my garden which I can water daily and have started picking already.

No wonder the soil moisture deficit is sky high now with just 29.8 mm of
rain falling this month and coupled with predominantly low humidity, 230+
hours sunshine and quite breezy conditions.

34.6mm this month in Penzance. 1st 6 months of 2008 have seen 424.9mm
rain, making it the driest Jan-June period since 1992 with 360.1mm

Unusually cold nights this month mean the the average min to date
(10.6C) is my lowest on record for June (records start 1992) just
beating 10.7 in 1999. Average max of 18.5C is lowest since 1992 - but
still just above the 1971-2000 norm of 18.2C

Similar here Graham.

Mean min here of 10.2°C is 0.2°C below the LTA for nearby Exeter Airport
whilst the mean max of 20.4°C is 1.3°C above the LTA.

Even though the nights were cooler than average the lowest was 5.1°C which
was still much higher than the chilly nights experienced at the beginning of
June 2006 (lowest 2.4°C).

Most of the nights (20) were between 9°C & 11°C apart from the last few
nights to end this June which were warm.

Re: [WR] Sunny & Breezy in Devon
With the sun nearly setting and the R&D recorder having just turned off this
has been the sunniest day this June with 14.2 hours of sunshine.

This is 86% of the theoretical sunshine available today and well below the
96% recorded in other months.

Still, it brings the total sunshine for this month up to 233 hours (47% of
the total available sunlight for the month) which is hell of an improvement
on June 2006 which only recorded 157 hours, and is an average of 7.5 hours a
day.
