Taking photos with Canon 350D and Meade ETX125
Hi
Has anyone done the above?
When I attach my Canon to the ETX 125 how do I set the exposure, focus and
apeture settings etc ?

Hi,
I'm sure many people have done that. I have relatively limited
experience with a Canon 300D/ETX125.
I use a vey nice program called DSLR focus
http://www.dslrfocus.com/home.html
to drive the camera from a laptop.
It is very useful to adjust the focusing, since it's very difficult to
see if you are in focus on the small camera screen.
For exposure, well, i guess I just experiment, depending on the subject.
Hope this help you a little bit

Almost everything that you need to know
should be on this site:-
http://www.weasner.com/etx/menu.html
Assuming that you are operating at prime focus,
then you must put the camera in Manual mode.
The apeture is decided by the ETX. There is a pc
application (Canon Remote ??) that comes with the
camera. It allows exposures up to 30 seconds, which
is fine for getting started. Set the iso about 800,
or even 1600. The higher the iso, the noisier the
image will be.
The biggest problem is focussing. If the moon is out,
then you may be able to do a rough focus through the
camera's viewfinder. Otherwise, try some medium sized jpg
shots of a star, at say 2s exposure, while you adjust focus.
Once you think that you
are at focus, then set the camera to large format
jpg and fine tune the focus.
At this point set the images to RAW mode, and start
taking images.
Check focus every 30 minutes.

I've done it successfully using an ETX-105. I use some ankle/arm
training weights (like beanbags with shot in them) to counterbalance
the tube. That may ne be necessary on the -125 as it's a bit larger.

Oh, and if you're serious about it, you'll want to use polar mounting,
not the default alt-az. The latter is OK for quick snaps and possibly
lunar shots, but you'll not get anything of reasonable quality in the
draker areas because the drive isn't smooth enough. Or so I've found.
