Upgrading SynScan software
Hi group,

I have a SynScan EQ6 GOTO with software version 2.6 and need to upgrade
to 3.11 which I believe is the most recent. This upgrade is available on
the disc sent out with the Sky at Night magazine; however, try as I
might I cannot get the software from my computer to the handset. I have
connected the handset to the serial port of the computer but the upgrade
software reports it cannot connect to the handset. There are no
instructions in the manual for the mount other than using the RS232 port
on the handset and setting its display to RS232. I would have thought
that at initialisation of the handset, the computer would recognise its
existence, but this obviously isn't happening. Does anyone have any
thoughts, please?

Hi John,

I also have the Synscan with version 2.6 and have found out that it is not
possible to upgrade this version of chip. You need the version 3 chip to be
able to upgrade the firmware - annoying, isn't it!!!

Hi John,
As already mentioned, the V2.6 handset cannot be upgraded.
However, if you would like lots of new features then you
should investigate EQMOD. This would give you PEC,
1 or n star alignments, sync and much, much more.
The best thing is that it is FREE. You may need to purchase
a hardware adapter EQDIR (about £35.00) and a cable.

There is a yahoo group where you can fet lots of advice and
support.

Re: Upgrading SynScan software
Thanks to all who replied to my problem. All is now clear! But what do I
do with the GPS unit I have just bought to upgrade my EQ6 GOTO? Anyone
want to buy it?

If you do get EQMod, then you may be able to use the GPS unit.
I know that it supports GPS devices, but I haven't used this
feature.

Re: Upgrading SynScan software
Hi group,

The supplier of this unit has agreed to take it back for a refund, but
what annoys me is that the manufacturer fails to take responsibility
when their product is not fit for purpose. A caveat from them on the
need for the latest version would have been useful. There may be
something on their web-site but, with a VERY slow dial-up connection
(where one page may take 5 minutes to load), I cannot subscribe to the
site and remain sane. That is why I thank all the good folk here who
have advised me of the situation.
To Donal I would say that the Yahoo group may be very informative but
again, the time taken to download is prohibitive. Perhaps I could take
BT to the European Court of Human Rights for denying me my access to
modern levels of communication!!

Thanks again,
jpd
