And they cost money, Frank. Even a donkey and cart cost money, although
not quite as much as a pony and trap. The best hope, and the nearest
thing to cheap public transport in a rural area, was to beg a lift into
town on market day with a local farmer - but if he had cattle to sell
he'd be walking anyway, driving the cattle in front of him.
