TV Alert : BBC Four Thurs 02/10 "Golden Age of Steam" evening
BBC Four seem to have a railway themed evening on Thursday 2nd October
titled "Golden Age of Steam".
20.00 - Hindsight: Lord Beeching
Eric Robson talks to Lord Beeching about his time as Chairman of the
British Railways Board and asks if, with hindsight, he would have done
things differently.
20.30 - Railway Walks 1/6
The Peak Express: Julia Bradbury begins her exploration of Britain's
lost rail empire in the Peak District, with a walk along the popular
Monsal Trail.
(Repeated 23.55)
21.00 - Ian Hislop Goes off the Rails
Ian Hislop takes a look at the notorious Beeching Report of 1963 which
led to the closure of a third of the nation's railway lines.
(Repeated 00.25)
22.00 - Great Railway Journeys
Crewe to Crewe: Another chance to follow Victoria Wood as she makes a
round trip to the north of Britain from Crewe, taking in both the east
and west coasts.

It would be nice to see the original (first) series again particularly
the Australian one which featured the old (3ft 6in) Ghan route to
Alice Springs now completely gone.
Also, I believe the Europe program was recorded before the days of
high speed lines and most certainly the Channel Tunnel.

I liked all that series of programmes, but the Australia programme was
my favourite, as it was yours. Michael Frayn was the narrator and
intelligent camera work used the tensions created by rail vehicles
moving along tracks.
