Northern Rail - certain guards need to get their act together
I thought members of this group might be mildly interested to read the
complaint I just sent to Northern Rail.

(Note: I'm pretty rubbish at writing complaint letters, I don't expect
anything from them, but I think they should know what some of their
guards are doing..)

Dear Sir/Miss,

I travelled on the (edited) service from (edited) to (edited)
yesterday (Wednesday 24th September) and I feel that I need to bring
some things to your attention.

When I got on the train I noticed that in addition to the guard on
duty there were two other guards (in full uniform) sitting near the
doors. After a couple of minutes I heard the off-duty guards talking
loudly and swearing to each other using the f-word repeatedly. One of
them started playing joke "sound bites" on their mobile phone with the
speaker turned up loud - I was sat near the middle of the carriage and
I could hear it clearly - one sound bite consisted of "f**k off you
fat c**t". This was played at least twice, along with other joke
sounds which contained the word f**k.

I am disturbed that this sort of behaviour is exhibited by Northern
Rail guards in full uniform. I must mention at this point that the
guard on duty did not take part in this behaviour at all.

Thank you for your time.

Regards
(my name).

-----

I can't believe that Northern guards in full uniform would display the
sort of anti-social behaviour we see on trains from chavs with mobile
phones!

On the face of it, your complaint is entirely reasonable.

However, your final paragraph suggests a certain unfamiliarity with
human nature. The lowest Common Denominator will usually assert itself,
unless there are mechanisms to prevent it.

Did he say he was surprised?
Appalling behaviour but fairly typical. Seems people using this sort
of language loudly in public have no interest in how offensive they
are. Possibly they wouldn't care anyhow. Just another change in public
behaviour that reduces the quality of daily life.

I agree with you. IMX, though, TOCs take complaints like this about
their staff seriously, so I expect that they will respond. It's
unlikely that they will be able to trace the perpetrators, but I
suspect that your complaint will be circulated at the appropriate
depot. Don't forget to let us know what the response is.

I had a reply from them at 6pm tonight, saying in a nutshell that
they'll investigate the complaint and interview the employees
concerned (I provided a description in my original email but edited it
out for the newsgroup).

There was no mention of letting me know what the outcome would be. At
least someone seems to be listening.

I'm pretty sure that you won't hear the outcome. At most you'll get a
further response on the lines of 'the members of staff concerned have been
identified and appropriate action taken'. Indeed, I doubt that the customer
services people who respond to this sort of thing get told any details of
what went on between the people concerned and their managers.

Ironically Northern recently briefed all Guards about passengers using
mobile phones to play music and reminded them what the byelaws state:

7. Music, sound, advertising and carrying on a trade

(1) Except with written permission from an Operator no person on the railway
shall, to the annoyance of any person:

        (i) sing; or

(ii) use any instrument, article or equipment for the production or
reproduction of sound.

I dont know if Northern will be able to track down the two involved, as I
suspect they were traveling Pass. But they will be able to track down the
Guard of that train.

A point worth knowing, Staff are exempt from that last one if its in the
course of there duties, so don't go quoting it to a NXEC Guards when they
start there mammoth announcements after every station!

Of course the management who did the briefing won't be
there to suffer the obscenities and abuse, even
violence, that the conductors will receive if they ask
people to stop.

I had a similar experience recently with a bunch of young people on a
TPE train, drunk, and using offensive language - one of them in
particular - and they were sitting in 1st class.

It was only when the guard turned up and asked them to move that I
found out that they were off-duty police. The guard wasn't having any
of their nonsense, and made them pay fares ("no, you can't travel on
your warrant cards, you're off duty"), and moved them to standard
class.

The noise and bad language carried on there too, though :-(

Re: Northern Rail - certain guards need to get their act together
Recently i got on a NXEC service from Darlington heading south. I have
a PRIV card, i would have bought my ticket at the office if there had
not been such a queue. Now i am aware of the rules on this one, and no
sooner had i boarded then the guard came around and i politely asked
could i get a ticket to doncaster or sheffield. Before i had the
chance to say if not could i get a single to northallerton i was
treated like a fare evader. In the quiet coach the guy concerned
seemed to take great delight in trying to humiliate me and my
colleague. We paid to northallerton and bought our tickets from the
office there no problem. The attitude of this guy was terrible. At one
point almost shouting at us for trying to freeload. All i did was
point out after that, if every other TOC can treat other rail workers
with respect why cant he?

Upon reporting to the customer services this event i got the usual we
will investigate speel and made sure i had given them the train i.d
and guards name. When i phoned then, they were astonished that a
member of traincrew would treat someone else who is 'in the job' in
such a way. However i never did get a written apology or any more
feedback from NXEC. It is a sad reality that the staff who let a
company down are remembered but those who do so much to provide a
decent service dont get the recognition they deserve!

Is the complaint that rail workers were treated in this way, or that
"customers" are treated in this way in general?

Both! It seems that there are a few (especially on NXEC in my
experiences) that do not treat any of their customers with any respect.

Fork? Cart? I hope you used the complete words in your letter of
complaint, and have "sanitised" it for public consumption. If
your complaint results in disciplinary action, then the alleged
offenders can use a perfectly good defence that they were indeed
saying "fork" and "cart", or other similar substitutes.

The trouble is, if you make this kind of complaint via their website,
and use the complete words rather than employing asterisks, your
complaint will almost certainly fall foul of the company's email
filtering system, and will never reach the proper recipient.
