EWS and Euro Cargo Rail
What is the relationship between them (if any)?

ECR is a subsidiary of EWS, EWS is a subsidiary of DB Schenker.

I'm not so sure as you seem to be, but a few days ago, Railion
Italia got selected by FMN to acquire 49% of their subsidiary
Nordcargo. SNCF reportedly was also interested; on the other hand, a
few months ago, SNCF had taken a 75% stake in the Dresden cargo rail
company ITL, and is in the process of a complete takeover of freight
forwarder Geodis, forming a similar operation to DB Schenker.

Not if Russian or Chinese railways buy DB when it gets privatised :-)

I wouldn't! Re the Russians - I'm really not too sure I'd be keen on
the Russian sphere of influence extending over the railways of Europe
(again). If Medvedev, Putin and co take a particular dislike to us
then they might not only turn off the gas, they might turn off the
railway as well!

According to an article in today's "Frankfurter Rundschau", the RZD
opt for a fifth of the stock for sale, having a 5% share overall.
SNCF had been invited, but declined a participation, the current
cooperation being enough, writes FR. Actually, SNCF is doing
everything to be able to compete with DB on all levels.
