Newton Heath Trip 1971
In a trip working booklet that I have, dated 1971, it mentions a trip
that used to, "Shunt Newton Heath Diesel Depot and Trip as required to
Newton Carriage Sidings and Brewery Sidings".
I can't for the life of me think, with any certainty, where Newton
Carriage Sidings were. I know where Newtown Carriage Sidings were (Just
outside Victoria on the Platting bank) and I know where Lightbowne
Carriage Sidings were (Opposite Newton Heath shed), but what are they
calling Newton C.S.? A copy of the trip notice is linked to on the front
page of my website.
Talking of my website, if anyone is following its progress (Or even if
you are not and would like to know what it is), I reached a milestone in
its development yesterday. The site is based upon the Sectional
Appendices issued by BR in 1960 and basically lists every station,
signal box and junction then in existence, as well as showing maximum
speeds, running lines, etc. I have designed the site so that lines will
be joined by hyperlink. So, when you reach a junction, there will be an
arrow to take you to the next line. Thus, it will be possible to
'travel' from Penzance to Thurso, and all lines in between, at the click
of a mouse, seeing what there was along the way. I challenge anyone not
to be amazed at how many signal boxes there once were!
Anyway, the milestone was that, with a couple of exceptions in northern
Scotland, I finally entered the last line and location yesterday. All
bar the shouting, every signal box, junction and station is listed. Now
all I have to do is to enter mileages, running lines and to link the
routes. As things stand, the most complete portions of the site, where
pretty much everything is up and running, is the L.M.R.
Eventually the site will include opening and closing dates and a
comprehensive list of private sidings.

My railway geography of Manchester is a little sparse I'm afraid, but
would it have been what I knew as Red Bank CS during the early 80's?
It's purely a guess, I'm sure if it's a wrong guess, I will know about
it very soon!!!
Many here will remember the empty van trains to Red Bank, returning
stock to Manchester in the morning, to work parcels and paper trains
to the East and North East overnight, I personally often travelled on
the Cleethorpes-Red Bank train, as it worked as a passenger train from
Cleethorpes to Doncaster, then ecs to Red Bank, and was frequently
class 40 hauled. This was the return working of the 0210 Manchester-
Cleethorpes passenger and paper train, if I remember correctly.
Congrats on the site, I haven't had time to look through it all yet,
but I'm sure that I am going to find some interesting reading for the
long, dark nights ahead...
