Stolen metal find 'biggest in UK'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/staffordshire/7586300.stm

"Scrap valued at £700,000 has been recovered in what
police have hailed as Britain's biggest find of
suspected stolen metal.

"Among the haul found during a search of the yard at
New Halden Metals, Cheadle, Staffordshire, was 200
tonnes of rail track, along with beer kegs and cables.

"A 43-year-old man who was questioned on suspicion of
theft and of handling stolen goods was released on
bail...."

Good! About time some of these thieves (and their fences) were caught
up with. Though presumably he track will be cut into small pieces, so
not a lot of use even if returned to NR, unless perhaps in sidings.

I wonder if the kegs were stolen for their metal value, or were
originally full and the scrap value was a secondary consideration?

Bailed??? What the....

If I'd gone and stolen £700000 from the Nat West you could bet that I
wouldn't be on bail. What about consideration of the lives put at risk
by theft of said cables and track? He may not have stolen them, but
he surely must be implicated as an accessory as he is in possession of
the goods?

As they've not charged, let alone tried and convicted, I think you're
jumping the gun here. They've been bailed presumably because there is not,
at least yet, sufficient evidence to charge them with an offence of theft or
knowing or having reasonable grounds to believe it has been stolen.

I've been to that scrapyard. It's "New Haden", by the way, not "Halden" as
reported. Real North Staffs industrial revolution hearland site. Was clearly
once a mine etc. Huge scrapyard - what a mess.

Part of the idea of releasing him on bail might be so that the scrapyard
continues to function, and those who don't follow the news continue to turn
up with their offerings.
Aluminium beer barrels have been prey for many years, and the breweries have
been offering rewards for their recovery. One scrapyard in Swansea had a
concealed furnace where they could be reduced to anonymous ingots.
Swansea was the site for several of the more audacious thefts I remember. In
one, a whole rake of stored mineral wagons had their phosphor-bronze
bearings stolen. In another (where I played a part in gathering evidence), a
local scrap merchant also had a contract to clear spoil from the back of a
foundry- he would almost fill his wagons with scrap from one of the piles,
cover it with spoil and drive out. The spoil and scrap would then be
separated by an electro-magnet at his yard, and he'd resell the scrap to
BSC! Even more audacious were the thiefs who stole all four wheels from the
new Traffic Division Jaguar- whilst it was in the police station car-park.

Actually you probably would, unless you'd stolen it at gunpoint. The
general presumption is for bail ahead of conviction, unless you're
(not the legalese but the gist) likely to run away or likely to pose a
serious risk to the public.

So how do *you* know they were allegedly stolen from an operating
railway?

The charges may refer to already scrap items awaiting disposal.

Epidemic!

"More than 1,000 drain covers have been stolen in County Durham so far
this year, highways chiefs have revealed."

No smoke without fire my friend!

I think it's rather more likely he has spent some of the filthy lucre
hiring the services of a smart arse lawyer, you know the type. Maybe
he has a friend in the USA called OJ... ;-)))

Scrap metal prices are apparently at an all time high. I should think
that it's the first time in their 20 year history that anyone is
actually pleased to own a Pacer unit or two...

Don't get caught up in another trial by media.

Remember: Innocent until proven guilty - that's the way it works. Even
if many of the police, the government, the media and a startlingly
worrying amount of the british public have forgotten that.

Yeah, fair point.

I guess that there could be a reasonable explanation, 200 tons of
track probably isn't that much, and track does get scrapped. The beer
kegs are altogether more suspicious though!!
