Oh dear! My dad was up early this morning to spend the full day there - lets
hope it's not too serious.

Nobody hurt, fortunately, but various locos and stock blocked in at
Oxenhope. Keighley - Settle Junction steam specials all had to be cancelled.
However, congratulations to K&W.V.R. for managing to run between Keighley &
Haworth to an emergency timetable, with 3 (reduced formation) train sets and
several locos.

They were hoping that a full service should operate on Sunday (29 June),
although Rail-Gen reports that the Keighley - Settle Jn shuttles will be
diesel hauled due to problems with 30777 tonight.

Now confirmed by the KWVR website, unfortunately. A shame when the
KWVR do small-scale so well that their biggest event of the
anniversary year should have one problem after another.

I was at Oxenhope when the derailment happened, hoping to get the first
(08:55) train through from Oxenhope to Hellifield/Settle Junction.

At the time, "Sir Lamiel" was attached at the Keighley end of a few of
the West Coast Railway coaches on the Goods Shed road in the yard,
Standard 4MT tank 80002 was on the Keighley end of the KWVR buffet set
in the station run-round loop, and the other standard KWVR set was in
the carriage shed.

47760, on the Oxenhope end of most of the West Coast Railway coaches
backed out of the yard onto the KWVR main line. Then it shunted forward
to take the stock into the station platform. Its front bogie derailed
on the points that give access to the whole of Oxenhope yard, blocking
access to the yard and the KWVR main line into Oxenhope.

For members of the public, it was easy to get a good view of the
derailed loco, because a public footpath crosses the track close by on a
level foot crossing.

Some time later, Black Five 45212 came up to Oxenhope and retrieved the
West Coast Railway stock that had been coupled to 47760.

A vintage bus shuttle was provided between Oxenhope and Haworth.

All the regular KWVR stock, plus "Sir Lamiel" and 80002 were trapped at
Oxenhope by the derailment. The main problem was stock, because there
was only the Vintage Carriages Trust and West Coast Railway stock
available to run trains on the part of the line that was useable.
Plenty of locos were available to power trains, and Taff Vale 0-6-2T
number 85 stayed on shed in reserve.

Three trains were put in operation on the Keighley to Haworth section of
the line:

1. One was formed of the L&Y 6-wheeled coach, a L&Y bogie coach, the
Pullman car "Mary" and the SR matchboard corridor coach. This was top &
tailed by L&Y 0-6-0 957 (Haworth end) and Jinty 47279.

2. Another was formed of the West Coast Railway stock retrieved by
45212. This was top & tailed by 90733 (WD 2-8-0, Haworth end) & 45212.

3. The third train was formed of two Met coaches and a BR Mk 1 suburban
coach, and in the early part of the day did at least one Keighley to
Ingrow shuttle with industrial locos "Sir Berkley" and "Nunlow". This
set was also used to represent the reopening special with 41241 (LMS 2MT
2-6-2T) at the Haworth end with headboard etc, and the two industrials
on the back, leaving Keighley for Haworth at 14:35.

Some time about 16:15, 61994 "Great Marquess" (Gresley K4 2-6-0) arrived
at Keighley from the main line (it was expected at about lunchtime).

At 17:10, 61994 took the L&Y/Pullman/SR vintage rake, plus the 61994
support coach, on the first departure through to Oxenhope. 957 & 47279
were coupled on the front of this as far as Haworth MPD. This train
crossed a long and fairly full train at Damems junction formed of "Sir
Lamiel", some West Coast Railway stock and the KWVR buffet set (and IIRC
45212 on the back).

61994 & the L&Y/Pullman/SR vintage train formed the 17:55 departure from
Oxenhope to Keighley to connect with the Ribblehead special, which
seemed OK when it departed from Keighley at about 18:45.

47760 was in the shed at Haworth when this train passed.

I'll upload some photos tomorrow.

My personal view is that the KWVR team did a very good job in retrieving
matters after a very unfortunate accident. Among the people present I
heard much more praise for their efforts than complaint.

Come on guys, a couple of 50 ton jacks, some packing timbers, one or two,
if needed, rerailing frogs and crowbars and a bit of muscle should have that
lot back on the track in under an hour. Don't you guys have rerailing
frogs?

Control rang in the middle of the night - derailment at Hockley.
GFF: 'Tell him to pull it on, same as I showed him.'
Half an hour later:
Control (with barely concealed laughter): 'He has done what you told him. He
has pulled it broadside across both Main Lines'.

I trust that the K&WVR got clearance from RAIB before moving stock involved
in the derailment, or commencing rerailing operations.

You probably wouldn't need ramps or jacks for that. The best way back on is
the way it came off. A gentle reverse with a bit of packing would probably
have got it sorted within ten minutes. Even if it didn't, you probably
wouldn't have been any worse off for trying.

Does anyone know what was the actual cause of the accident? while i
was at Keighley on Saturday a.m. just after the 47 tried the cross-
country option. . . .a chap who'd been at Oxenhope, said he thought it
was a failure to secure the points lever full-over and locked. . . .so
was it a simple human-error that set in motion the chain of
events?. . . .anyroad they've had worse ont branch. . . .see
photobucket.com/_Tezza and thanks for all the post.

Does anyone know how the accident ocurred ? Whilst i was at Keighley
station on the Saturday morning, just after the 47 had tried the cross-
country option,a chap who'd been at Oxenhope said it was a simple
inability to get the point lever over and secured, that set in motion
the train of events that affected so many,'let the wrecks of others be
your sea-markers' but the old branch will learn and move-on,they've
had worse in the valley over the years click on www.photobucket.com/_Tezza
for evidence,cheers for the post.

Well, it looks like my old dad had a bad day all told - he should have
stayed in bed.

They arrived at Keighley to be told of the problems, but elected to stay on
and make the most of the shortened services using the available and unusual
coaching stock (no shortage of locomotives though).

Then he advises me that the evening steam special to Ribblehead failed
en-route and they had to wait for a diesel from Hellifield to rescue them
and drag the train back to Keighley.
They then got on a Northern service to Leeds which got caught up in a signal
failure somewhere around Shipley and took over an hour longer than planned
to get them back into Leeds.
As he's getting on a bit and by this point it had been a very long day, he
decided to get a taxi home from Leeds station, only for the taxi to break
down as it passed Leeds town hall!

They had planned to go back on the Sunday when the KWVR were planning to
operate a normal service, but gave it up as a bad job!

Sunday went much better, but the failure (on Saturday) of Sir Lamiel
meant that the planned trains to Settle Junction were diesel-hauled
by 37248 Loch Arkaig and, not being top-and-tailed, could only run as
far as Hellifield.
