September Engineering Works...
Apparently 13th and 14th are excluded from early booking since there are
going to be engineering works. I'm planning on travelling from
Newark-Reading, so have a choice of routes (via London, Nottingham-London,
and Birmingham) Anyone have any more information? NX say there are works, NR
say there aren't.
Thanks
Marcus

The relevant part of "Rules of the Route" is not currently online,
but before it was taken off it was showing work around Shaftholme
Junction for those dates, i.e.closing Doncaster-York. If that is
still correct, it *should* mean that the southern part of the East
Coast Main Line will be *relatively* unaffected, as the Leeds
services can still run (and perhaps they will use HST stock to divert
trains from further north via the non-electrified York-Leeds line as
has happened in the recent past) - but no promises! Note that this
is my (entirely unofficial) 'take' on the situation - I monitor
upcoming engineering work fairly closely as I like to travel over
any unusual track on offer.

In that case, do you have any idea what's is going to happen on
September 6th? We're planning to take the 8:45 from Euston to Holyhead
on that day, but this train doesn't show up (yet?) on that day. If we
have to take the 8:12 instead (change at Crewe), arriving at 7:55 from
Brussels at St Pancras is probably not advisable :-(

Obviously anything involving the WCML is a bit 'dodgy' at weekends at
the moment, but I can't see anything specific that should affect the
service early on that day.

I would have thought the 'Saturday 1000 closure' at Rugby - which apparently
is going to happen on a majority of Saturdays until the end of the year -
would be likely to remove this option from the timetable? It seems it does
tomorrow (28th Jun) anyway, the last through train is the 0755 to Liverpool.

The only thing that is certain is that the service on that part of the WCML
will bear no resemblance what-so-ever to the published timetable. Looking
at this weekends service
see http://downloads.virgintrains.co.uk/docs/28_june_08_nb.pdf
you will see the last through trains leave Euston at 07.55, subsequent
services either involve buses or diversion via High Wycombe (xx.00
departures from Euston).
The virgin press release
http://www.virgintrainsmediaroom.com/index.cfm?articleid=1140
quotes this diverted services as running on Saturdays 28 June until 6
September, so it would seem likely that a similar service will run on 6
Spetember, but this may not be confirmed until much nearer the time.

Through trains from London to Holyhead are always the first
to get the axe when there is any engineering work going on.
I believe Virgin will be shuttling Crewe - Holyhead on these
days.

Don't you mean "improvement" works? :)

Because they are moving most of their Voyagers to the Birmingham
International - Euston via South Greenford blockbuster service.

In this specific case it's because the Voyagers are going to be used
for the "blockade runners" - though admittedly they tend to go anyway
(together with a reduction in the Manchester service, usually) due to
lack of paths on any diversion.

Quite. I'm told some Saturday Crewe - Holyhead workings will
be 57+Pendolino, and some others won't run at all, with just
one Class 221 return working.
