Yes. I know what you meant. :-)
Most traffic-division officers used to carry a flexible shim (*),
which could open most makes of car, by insertion down the side of the
glass and latching the lock-button linkage.
I had occasion to request their help once, after accidentally leaving
my jacket inside, with the keys in the pocket. That was in a Rover,
too.
Nick.
p.s. The officer was seemingly "going equipped" ;-)

Pity these day's the average copper can't even spell shim.

My dad had a P6, the trick was to saw off the top half inch
of the door latches where they widen out.
Then a thief can't lasso them with a string pushed through the top of the
door

I think you've missed Nicks point. Nobody in their right mind would
contemplate stealing one ;-)

Later Rovers like the SD1 made by BL were crap, but the P6 was a
wonderful car, it was the first British car to be built around a safety
cell,
with crumple zones. Disc brakes all round with dual circuit break circuits,
and many other innovations.

Only real problem with P6s was brake fade, otherwise a very nice car. A
neighbour of ours had one in the mid 70s, 2 litre model. The 3.5 was
even more amazing, but remember the brake fade!
I once drove an SD1 racing conversion at Thruxton, with about 500bhp.
The steering was interesting as giving it full throttle twisted the
chassis so much it wanted to go its own way!
