Do the minutes say, or has any figure ever been estimated, of how many
youngsters, attracted via the GB4FUN route, have gone on to a Full
licence?
I thought not.
The RSGB might find it was cheaper to pay for youngster's exams rather
than squander money on this whitish elephant.

Ah, so the true cost of the exam system isn't reflected in the exam
fees.
Perhaps a simpler system, something like a single exam, could replace
the current Byzantine route, and GB4FUN wouldn't be necessary. Rather
like the overseas exams the RSGB also runs.

Don't I have to get approval from the general manager of the RSGB before
I start a petition? He had a bit of a rant about it in this months Radcom.

At the time the new system was being put forward, I lobbied for a
multi-level entry system, so that those who thought themselves
qualified could have a stab at the intermediate or top level. That was
scuppered by the requirement to demonstrate how to wire a mains plug
at a time when all mains equipment had to have a moulded plug and lead
already supplied, and by the total lack of enthusiasm go against what
appeared to be set policy.
The cost of getting people through to Full via the various publicity
routes such as GB4FUN should really be assessed; the RSGB is a
business and can't afford to wast money on speculative ventures ("it
seemed a good idea at the time" doesn't cut it). One suspects internal
problems stop the questions being asked.

He was having a moan about the 70cm petition, not surprising really as

I can't see why they can't just add the questions on to the "ADVANCED"
paper, it would only take another 1/4 of an hour to do the test and very
little effort from the examining body to see if they had ticked some of
the correct boxes.

I suspect he was having a rant because there's now been a
demonstration of yet *another* mechanism for members and non-members
to air their views and affect RSGB policy.
The good old days of edicts being handed down on high have long gone -
it's just the RSGB haven't realised it yet. Ranting against it shows
how out-of-touch they are, as if we needed further proof.

If someone of the position of General Manager is having what has been
described as 'a rant' in print in the house journal, then there
clearly is 'something to tell'.
Perhaps he's thrown his teddy out of the pram because Radio Amateurs
have found yet another way of putting forward the policies they want,
that doesn't involve the RSGB in the slightest.
That is very bad news for the RSGB

But it has showed that Amateurs can bypass the RSGB by yet another

Alternatively, they could ask SDW to write the exam paper! Imagine what fun
that would be for the candidates?

Not to mention the 12 year 6 months to set the questions and a further 12
years 6 months to mark the papers :-(

If you suggest that you expound a different set of opinions when you
speak on behalf of the RSCB, then that would be an admission of
being two-faced which would be par for the course for all
other representatives of the RSCB appearing contemporaneously
in this NG; "Do as I say but not as I do" being their mantra.

I'd be careful to cater for all comers, and in respect of Numpty Truckers
who have not even attained the level of 6-year-olds despite purchasing
their books from the RSCB over 20 years ago, I'd have to offer
questions such as ...
1. In arithmetic, what is the result of the sum 1+1?
a) 2
b) 2
c) 2
d) 2
There's no other way that Numpty Truckers would pass.

Once more, an RSCB representative bested in debate runs away with
his tail between his legs to the safety of a kill-file shouting insults as
he goes.

Well of course common-sense would suggest that a full licence exam,
could consist of three pages/sections and include the pages/sections
for the two other licences. The IL exam would consist of the first
two pages/sections and the FL consist of the first page.
That would allow for individuals taking all three (or two) exams
together.
So for example at an examination session, some candidates could be
given all three parts to complete, in hopes of getting the full
licence.
Others would be given the first two parts for completing and if
successful gaining an intermediate licence.
Still others - prospective FLs, would only have to crayon in their
name and address on page one, to get their licence.

Or else give all 3 stages unconditionally and award one of the
three grades dependent on the number of papers passed ...
a) 5+, eligibility to start at kindergarten school
b) 11+, eligibility to start at senior school
c) Full pass, eligibility to come on the air displaying complete ignorance
and shouting "19 for a copy, twig SWWAAARRRRR needed, come back"
No doubt MOUSEY, if he sat such a three parter today would only
achieve (a) because he's forgotten everything he mugged up on in this NG
only a few weeks ago?
