internals of their rig, nor are they interested in finding out.

Many of them do not even know what the buttons do.

On a few occasions, I have asked operators to alter their rig from FM
to narrow FM to suit the two metre bandplan, and thus improve their
audio, and they have had no idea of how to do that. 

And has anyone else noticed that whenever a two metre net containing
Gee Threes suffers adjacent channel interference from a local internet
gateway it is _always_ due to that gateway overdeviating {*}, and
_never_ever_ever_ their own rig at fault!

Some, even ask for the buttons to be removed and replaced with zips.
