I don't think he did, he died in 2006 from emphysema, he had suffered with
ill health for many years, possibly due to a car crash some years ago.
He had been married 3 times.

Brilliant! A TYA fan I take it? There's some great clips of Alvin Lee on

Perhaps "fan" isn't the right word, but Cricklewood Green is very high on
my list of best LPs - and is one of the "pride of place" items in my
vinyl collection. I've been having a good reminisc at those youtube
clips. :-)

Hmmm... may have to shell out for a CD now...

It was in the final and did far better than the British entry (12th with
83 points, we made it into 25th place with 14 points;c) even Terry Wogan
liked it! Makes a good ring tone.

I confess that I have gone off the Eurovision 'Song' Contest a bit (an
extremely large bit). I certainly didn't watch much of it this year
(mainly only the 'scoring' bit, and not even all of that). I'd rather
watch 2 hours of Amy Whinehouse. Any bets on Terry Wogan not doing it
next year?

I believe it was around the time the TV standard changed from 30 lines

I love the way she used to say "La Norvedge, null pwang."
Didn't she marry an Italian with... (say no more).

Was she not also one of the early TV chefs?

Or was that Katy Roast?

Don't believe him, Wlat.
I've looked on 405 lines and there's nothing there.
You stick with 30.

In the early days of computing it was all Octal and not Hexadecimal.

When the time came for the second change-over, computing was just
beginning to appear in TV engineering, and there is an urban legend that
625 lines was chosen because 625 is the Octal equivalent of 405 decimal.

No. She is, herself, an Italian and she has seen off three husbands
... the first one an Irish Viscount.

She was born in Florence, Italy, the daughter of an Italian marquis,
the Marchese Demetrio Imperiali di Francavilla and Dorothy Kate
Ramsden. She came to England in 1946.

In 1947 she married Viscount Boyle (now Earl of Shannon); the marriage
was dissolved in 1955. The same year she married Greville Baylis, a
racehorse owner who died in 1976. In 1979 she married for the 3rd time
to Sir Peter Saunders, the theatre impresario who died in 2002.

Yes, I've been Googling. It appears that she was host for Eurovision
Song Contest only four times, between 1960-74. It seemed like a lot
more.

So why 405 in the first instance?

As well as the 30-line Nipkow disc system, there was the experimental
Baird 240-line system. How does that fit in?

An odd number of lines was required for interlaced scanning, but why 405 and
not 401 or 399, for example?
