I asked how much VAT,, not what proportion of value.. ie, is the VAT
charged on the US payment or on a UK book value for the kit or finished
radio?
As if you purchase an ipod for example, vat is charged on the uk price, not
the price that you pay in the USA.

You will pay VAT on the amount in £££ it costs you when you buy the
kit or complete radio when it is converted from Dollars, depending on
the exchange rate.
We paid just over £200 pound when it was delivered to the door.

Was there a handling charge on top of that?

You asked how much VAT was charged by the UK Gov, the answer is and always
will be, until they put it up, 17.5%.

Where did you hear that load of bollox, You only pay the VAT rate of 17.5%
on the price *you paid for it* plus a handling charge by the carrier to
retreive it out of customs on your behalf (unless it's value is less than
£18) regardless of how much it may be offered for sale here in rip-off
Britain.

Don't bother getting a K3, you sound to stupid to appreciate it.

Erm,, My Brother in Law purchased an ipod last year in America, he didn't
declare it, and was stopped by customs. The VAT charge that they imposed
was based on the UK retail price for the ipod, not the $160 that he had paid
for it. .. So it is not a load of bollox.

http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageLibrary_PublicNoticesAndInfoSheets&propertyType=document&columns=1&id=HMCE_CL_000230#P25_1501

It says that if the price charged appears too low, then the rates of VAT or
duty can be based on the auk or European standard prices if using method 1
or 2, they then could use method 4 to arrive at the price based on similar
imported goods.

That is why I was asking what the cost of VAT was for the K3.. nice to see
such a pleasant response from someone on this newsgroup.

That's the price you pay for not declaring it you berk, if your thicko
brother had declared it in the first place and produced a receipt then he
would have only paid VAT on the amount that he paid for it.

If you order a K3 from the US, the seller will fill out a customs form
stating what it is and it's value, when it get's to the UK you will be
charged the current VAT rate of the declared value and not the value of a
retail price in the UK.

You really are to stupid to own a K3.

Aren't you allowed to bring in total of normal shop purchases of
something like £125? Presumably the BiL had other things too.

Re: K3 anyone got one?
HI from Ken, G4KIR,

I have one and paid £260.00 VAT on my package ( all items that were
available for the "K3" at the time of purchase ).

"UPS" delivery by the way cost another £100.00
It took only two days to arrive from being posted at 'APTOS' CA.

Was it worth it you may ask ; You bet, cheers all Ken, G4KIR.

To be honest, I can't really remember! I have the invoice somewhere, I'll
try and dig it out.

No need to bother, if there was it was probably a pittance compared to
overall cost

Re: K3 anyone got one?
Hi from Ken,

It's always had a second VFO.

if you mean, is the second fully independent RX available yet, then the
answer is yes.
They started shipping about a week ago now to the customers.
The beta-testers have had them for some time of course.

Hope this answers your question, cheers, Ken, G4KIR.
