Happy days! I remember it well.

Do you also remember Prestel (1200/75 bps) and 300 bps dial-up BBSs?

Not to mention playing on-line games via the JANET network. (Hosted
at a university in Essex, I seem to recall.)

I remember the Post Office B2 300 Baud modem which was all that was
available (and permitted for connection to the network) in 1980.

I've got a 300 Bauder somewhere in the junk box where you put your
handset into a couple of rubber cups so as not to effect an electrical
connection to the network.

I had a Commodore C64 with a dual standard Prestel and Compunet modem

and a C1541, 5 1/4in floppy disk drive, with serial bus, making it the
slowest drive ever

Luxury!

Indeed. I even remember the fuss when 'Phil the Greek' had his
Prestel mailbox cracked by a couple of part-time computer journo's :-)

I remember an Epson portable computer, which had acoustic couplers for
a standard GPO handset, built-in. (1979-ish)

ISTR the computer's display was something like 6 twenty character
lines... Probably made the 300bd look fast. :-)
