Calling all hard-liners...!
There's quite a fight going on over here...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_myth_hypothesis

I reckon there are more than a few alt.atheism regulars who'd be able to
knock heads together in this kind of row!
Anyone wanna join in...?

Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt.
It's a huge waste of time. Wikipedia is written by the passionate
with the most spare time. To think it means more than USENET is
insane.
At least USENET doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't.

Apart from the historical basis (..or not) it seems to me that much
argument is about the semantics of language.
It does show, however, the need to be careful with wikipedia info...

Actually, it's a ``Dave in Las Vegas can't post on topic to save
his life'' t-shirt.
Speaking of which, why do you waste your life singing the praises
of a third-rate god who's conclusively been proven never to have
walked the face of the Earth, let alone put in a personal
appearance in a certain minor outlaying Roman possession a couple
millennia ago?

If you're going to use a tu quoque fallacy, at least try to make it
credible. You've just demonstrated the at least partial accuracy of Ken's
comment in one short sentence.

Over 80% of high school dropouts believe in your imaginary sky fairy,
while less that 10% of Nobel Laureates do.

Whoa, whoa, whoa... hold your horses, atheist.
Chill.
Take a deep breath.
Relax.
Where does your hatred come from, atheist? Why do you feel the need to hate, son?
Relax.
Jesus loves you. He always has. And always will.
F*ck it, atheist. He knew His shit. And you can't do anything about it, atheist.
So, just chill. Relax. Take a deep breath.
And focus your hatred towards, let's say, corporations. Rich people. And such.

Sorry, boy. You feel attacked so you're talking bullshit. Defensive you is, atheist.
No need for that. Ok?
I say that all christians are as stupid as atheists and vice versa.

Big and small, atheist. Big and small.

Who gives a shit? I don't give a shit about people who give a shit about a prize that landed into
Henry "Don't open my files until 5 winters have passed since my death" Kissinger's hands, "dude".
Do you understand?
Is that too hard for you to understand, atheist?

Sorry, was there some part of the atheist creed (you know, the one which
doesn't exist) that requires of us such things as loving our enemies,
turning the other cheek and other such things?
No?

2,000 years of institutionalized discrimination, torture, killing,
segregation, degradation and flat-out evil, all from people claiming to
follow a "loving" and "good" deity, while doing every single thing they
can to ensure society never develops past the dark ages? Just maybe?

People who first, never seem to have actually existed and second, if they
did, are long dead, aren't particularly capable of loving much of
anything... but then, we expect this sort of nonsense from theists.

Why? They're just in business to make money, and some of 'em even do
significant good. Christianity, as an organization, is dedicated to
entirely different propositions.

Hot damn, are you ever so terrified of discussing the topic of
this thread -- namely, the fact that Jesus never existed outside
of religious mythology. In fact, I'm quite curious to see how
you'll attempt to change the subject.

And again : the "atheist love and understanding" at it's "best".
Look, kiddo. I know it's easier for you to "squash the cockroach" then to
"understand" him. Let alone "love" him. I know that's an impossible task for
an atheist.
But, you'll just have to try.

I'm not sure that its a discussion worth having, unless you can
agree on what constitutes 'existed' in this case.
- did someone called Jesus exist: almost certainly, it was a common name
- did Jesus (Christ) exist: (Chrestus, teacher) very likely, it was
a common name
- did a Jesus exist who had a small cult following: quite possibly
- did Jesus, as described in the bible, virgin birth, walking on
water, curing the sick, turning water into wine, died and came back
as a zombie, exist: as these would all be remarkable events and
there appears to no independent record of it then we can assume that
this is simply mythology
It is easy to see how myths can build up, particularly in a culture
with very low literacy levels and where story telling is the
tradition for passing of morality tales.
So, that *a* Jesus existed isn't contentious and *the* miracle
working, son of god Jesus isn't taken seriously by many people these
days (it appears to have been abandoned by most of the clergy in the
UK now) - what is there to debate?

It isn't.

And which one of these ids the Jesus they mean?

Like the above, it's a rationalisation.

Trouble is, there is no evidence.

They have only the Gospels which are a work of religious propaganda
aimed at believers in the Mediterranean myths and legends of hero
figures, and which repeat earlier stories of Hercules, Perseus and
others in what the writers imagined was a first century Palestine
setting - but one that gets basic historical and geographic details
wrong.
And which were written after Paul's epistles which show no knowledge
of an historical Jesus.
It requires secular corroboration, of which there is none after the
only claimed reference (Josephus) doesn't stand up to the slightest
scrutiny as it was obviously written by a Christian, not the Jewish
historian.
>It is easy to see how myths can build up, particularly in a culture

But even so, the Gospels were fairy stories written after Christianity
had already started, when it changed from belief in a nebulous,
spiritual Christ and needed a human hero to make it palatable for the
Mediterranean gentiles.

"*A* Jesus" is a worthless rationalisation until they say which of the
thousands of different Jesus was the one they mean.
You're right. There's nothing to debate. Nobody would give a toss if
Christians had the sense to keep it within their religion.
But they don't. They expect everybody else to believe this
hypothetical Jesus was the most important person ever.
And we wouldn't have known about the complete lack of anything to back
this up outside the Christian tradition, if their attempts to put up
had any substance.
That is the real problem: they neither put up nor shut up.

There was an interesting programme on C4 last night about the fundies in
the UK. It would be difficult to find a more ludicrous bunch and they
displayed their belief in bible inerrance which only served to make them
look utterly ridiculous. The age of the Earth was a particular problem
for them!

The Christianity is geared towards control of people in the beginning.
Now people are smarter and dislike control, so the emphasis has gone
into love.....wait, "hell" first.

I knew a few, but they weren't anything as bad as their American
counterparts.
The England I grew up in regarded somebody's religion as their own
business so the fundamentalists weren't in-your-face with it.
When I went up to university in 1966 there were a group everybody
laughed at, that we called the god squad, who went after freshers. But
even those didn't chase them. Although the newly "born again" were a
bit obnoxious at first until they learned that their former friends
weren't interested.
I had my first fundy when I was eight, and she couldn't cope with a
kid who had never been taught religion or gods, but had been taught to
read early and encouraged to read and learn for himself,=.
In my thirties I met a couple of jerks who were rude enough to tell me
what I believed when they found out I was atheist.
One of the highest profile fundies was James Anderton, the then chief
of police for Greater Manchester. A thorough loonie who said in a BBC
interview that God had placed hi min that job to carry out God's
orders. His first act was to prosecute the city centre newspaper
vendors under the obscene publications act for selling the tabloids
with their page 3 girls.
He enforced the Sunday trading laws more than any other police force.
In the interview he actually said they shouldn't sell their goods
because they and their customers should be in church.
So the City of Manchester was ringed by DIY superstores but the ones
in Stretford where he worked and Sale where he lived were closed on
Sundays because of repeated raids.
The privately owned Sale DIY was like a speakeasy. You knocked on the
door, a panel slid back and once they were satisfied with you they
would unlock it to let you in.
They were regularly raided, but it was a matter of principle for them.
But a decade and a half later there was Tony Blair. He has a heck of a
lot to answer for.

I didn't say we don't care about those things; I said we are not
compelled, by "our creed", to do them.
Christians, on the other hand, *are* compelled by their creed to do such
things, yet fail, miserably, day in and day out, often while lobbing
threats and the like.
Pointing out the hypocrisy of the typical Christian doesn't require that
we believe as they or that we have a creed; it simply requires that
Christians act as we expect Christians to act: hypocritical and dishonest.

What is palpably obvious and demonstrated beyond doubt by the words you
write here, is your towering intellectual (in)capability...
All here have witness to it.
It's quite usual for those who are incapable of logical argument, or have
lost that argument, to resort to ad hominen attacks.
That is also well noted here by others.
Actually, you don't say very much that is remotely of interest whatsoever...

Of course you are not "compelled".
I mean, who ever saw an atheist that is full of love and compassion, for instance?
Have you ever seen an atheist "turning the other cheek"?
God forbid. I think their heads would make a 360 degree turn.

So, if you are not "compelled", you ought to "publicly shut up" and mind your own
business, whacko atheist.
If you, by some kind of magic, do feel "compelled" to do those forementioned things,
you may speak up. And you deserve to be heard.
Otherwise - shut the f*ck up, dumbass.

Since atheism is only lack of belief in deities, "understanding and
compassion" are not properties of atheism. They can be properties of
atheists, but not necessarily.
You see, atheists are not a cohesive group. The actions of one do not
reflect on anyone else. Even if the largest, cruelest, and disgusting
mass murderer that ever lived was an avowed atheist, it would not have
any bearing on any other atheist, any more than if that murderer was a
male, had a mustache, was bald, or any other irrelevant defining
characteristic of the murderer.

Boy, when you have this warm feeling that there is something that takes
care of your coward-ass because you can't stand it that you are a
coward, this feeling that you have, when normally your piss runs down
your legs, then this has nothing to do with love and compassion.
Some others have this feeling when they worship their god soccer or
basketball, others again sitting in the evening-sun bathing their
fishing-bait.
What a poor being that only can feel love and compassion through an
invisible super-nanny.

True. A useful calibration tool when making comments about atheists
is to see how the same comments sound when applied to people who are
not stamp collectors.
I don't even like being called an a-theist. As a label it makes
about as much sense as being categorised as a non-rapist or a
non-paedophile.

I've seen *many*. Again, you confuse simple things. In this case, you
confuse the atheist not tolerating typical Christian hypocrisy with the
atheist not having love and compassion. Since those are not the same
thing, even remotely, why are you unable to tell them apart?
> Have you ever seen an atheist "turning the other cheek"?
Many, many times.
The most obvious example is when the atheist encounters yet another god-
addled nutjob, but instead of pointing out the insanity of their beliefs,
he simply lets them rant. Happens every day.

Excuse? That makes no sense. You're not compelled by your creed to go
pee; does this mean you will never again do so? Obviously not. Try
again.

I see; by recognizing hypocrisy and calling someone on it, we are
malicious, vicious and stupid. Whereas ignoring hypocrisy and allowing
it to spread unchecked is loving and kind and proper. Is this what
you're suggesting?

Well thank you for your contribution to the debate. I'm not sure why
you didn't explain what it does mean so we could all benefit.
However, it very much depends on the origin of the word...
Chrestus (as per my spelling above) would mean "useful one", often
used in the context of a teacher
I suspect that the point you failed to make was that if the
derivation was from Christos - then either anointed (or plastered).
> And the rest of your post is even less substantial.
But clearly much more substantial than your response, which appears
deliberately devoid of any content?
However, my point still stands:
That an unremarkable jesus existed - would be unremarkable in itself.
That a remarkable jesus existed - is simply unsupported by any evidence.

Let's see:
zasochimti: "You want evidence of Jeebus' existence? Look into the
mirror, son."
This makes sense only if zasochimti is claiming the other poster is, in
fact, "Jeebus", aka "Jesus". Meaning you've just asserted that Ben is,
in fact, Jesus.
Telling him he has "lost it" for pointing out the oddity of your saying
he is Jesus doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
So is he Jesus? If so, his comments are right in line with what you said.
Or isn't he Jesus, in which case, your telling him to look in the mirror
is a suggestion completely detached from any sort of reality?
And in either case, how is one supposed to treat the conclusion - either
conclusion - as anything but some form of mental defect on your part?
